So, my brother and I were out of the house for practically the whole day today.
We sent the maids down to the shop, then had to go to Meghan Ambassy, where my mom has her new premises, to look for a set of keys and access card. My parents have misplaced a set for one of the apartments. (So I also got to see the apartment that's in my name for the first time, too. It is kind of claustrophobic and I can't put my finger on why. It's not really appreciably smaller than a lot of apartments I've lived in. I think part of it has to do with how cramped the hallways feel, because this is one of the most handicap-unfriendly places ever. I've lived in disability-unfriendly places, but those tended to be houses or old complexes. This one's new, so it doesn't really have an excuse.) (Also, it's clear this apartment is only mine in name and not in spirit because damn, there isn't a single bookshelf in there.)
Then went to Low Yatt Plaza (as per
geminianeyes's recommendation) to check things out. We had breakfast there, and while waiting, I pulled out a notepad to make some notes about possible costs and payment options for my SEAsian SFF zine. I'm still really torn between paying a simple flat rate, versus a per/word rate with a budget. I mean, I guess the flat rate to start with isn't bad, but I really want it to be competitive from the get-go.
I've been looking for a new tablet with a keyboard dock, something I can use to read stuff with and write on. So far, the Asus Transformer T100 looks pretty good. I also had a look at the Archos 101XS and the Samsung Galaxy Note. The latter is pretty strong competition too. But I think the Asus is the best value for money. I'll probably buy it here and then get a new charger for it in the States.
We also saw mouses designed for gamers... with pretty patterns... lit by LEDs... AND IT WAS SO GORGEOUS. They're only RM49! AAAAAA! And we of course stopped by a shop that geared specifically towards gamers and I had no idea that gamers had the god damn prettiest computer stuff dedicated to them, like, hot damn. Logitech G710+ is the prettiest keyboard I have ever seen. I am SO buying it. My computer station will be beautiful and nothing will hurt. Why don't they make machines specifically for writers? Don't they understand the ready market waiting?
(Also noticed just how aggressive so many of these stall owners are; if you so much as glance their direction they're already asking you what you're looking for! I actually really like that. It's disappointing to have to tell them "no, not interested in what you've got actually" but meh, we direct-marketers learn to take these things in stride.)
By the time we pried ourselves away, it was around 1.20, and we had to get to Midvalley firstly to eat lunch (we had MacDonald's), and then get me to my LASIK consultation.
It was... interesting! Lots of different machines to stare into. Realized just how bad my astigmatism is: when I was looking at that red/green screen? Was convinced for a bit that I was actually looking at a rainbow screen of six bars of colour, two gradations of red, an orange, a yellow, then two gradations of green. My prescription is mostly close to my glasses' prescription: 6.25/6.00, and now both my eyes are 6.25. My astigmatism is 175 for both eyes.
Then the nurse put some stuff in my eyes to make the pupils dilate for the retina test and it burned! Not as badly as the time when fake-eyelash-remover got into my eye, but still! We went to the doctor, he checked it out, and recommended the RM3600/eye procedure. I'm going to talk to my dad about this. My glasses are hella scratched up, and I remember he advised me to get LASIK done as soon as possible so I would have the most years out of it before my eyes started deteriorating again due to age. So... if I did it now, I'd have ten years of being glasses-free before age starts to catch up to me.
A side-effect of having your pupils dilated: the whole world filled with regular ol' sunshine suddenly becomes really fucking annoying to look at. I had to squint and at the end of it my brother found some clip-on sunglasses which were aviator style, so now I'm annoyed at the sunglasses instead. But I did check it out in the mirror and it is so weird!!!! I wish I could have taken a picture but my phone cam wasn't up to it, and neither was my brother's.
We drove back to Subang and my parents already had plans for dinner, so we betook ourselves to a hawker stall, and then went to have ice cream. I also bought myself bus tickets to Singapore: heading down on Thursday afternoon, then leaving Saturday evening. I... uh, still haven't confirmed where I'm staying. I'm hoping to stay with a cousin who lives near Dakota, but apparently there's been a flu going around in the house. I also made an appointment for a dentist visit tomorrow, and then bought myself a new pair of shoes. They're nice slip-on sandals that aren't my grody Teva's, which, while awesome for hiking, are falling apart a bit, and also, are kind of stinky.
When we got home, we left the parents to themselves, and then took a very long walk with the dog. We rehashed the same argument about pugs and Chinese cresteds. Corgis are cute. He's really enjoying
qian's SPIRITS ABROAD. We both want to get into the apparel business. Stuff. Yay.
