A little bit of holiday fic

Oct 31, 2004 21:01

The first in a series of holiday drabbles, written at hyel's prompting.

Not title as of yet, but you're subject to it anyway. It's a double drabble. And as a side note, the last line comes from a song by Beethoven.

Rating: G
Pairing: Eowyn/Faramir

Eowyn stood behind her husband, wrapping her arms around his waist and looking curiously around his shoulder to the candles on the windowsill.

As he finished with the last of the candles, he spoke, “There’s an old tradition, one I’ve kept faithfully since childhood. Tonight is Samhain, the night when those who have died wish to be remembered.”

Using a candle from the nearby table, he lit the candles one by one. “ For my brother, my mother…” Pausing for a moment, he took a deep breath. “And my father.” His hand shook as he lit the last but the wick caught and blazed true.

Biting her lip and hugging him fiercely, she looked at the leftover candles, her words nearly lost in a rush of love.

“And those? Who else do we remember tonight?”

Eyes shining, he lit the last three. “For Theoden king of Rohan and for Eomund and Theodwyn, for they are sorely missed.”

Blowing out the candle and setting it down on the sill, he turned and pulled her close, whispering the vows they had made, not so very long ago.

“So all cares are halved by thee and me, and lightly now we bear them.”
