Pippin pulled on his shirt, and Merry continued to walk along, giving Estella what she thought he thought were inconspicuous. But she noticed them, one after another, and they reminded her, in a way, of that warmth that Alyssum had had her feel.
"And was there point for finding us?" Merry asked, at length, drawing his shirt on, but leaving it undone.
"Of course, cousin," and Alyssum plucked a flower up from the path, waving it at Merry. "We are in need of entertainment, you see. And I thought, if there is a hobbit here who can make me laugh…"
"Why thank you," Merry replied, dry, turning his attention to Estella, as Alyssum did the same. A passing moment, and that yellow flowered was tucked behind Estella's ear, and warmth flooded her cheeks.
And Merry couldn't help but smile.
"So," he said. "Yes. What is it you'd like to do?"
Pippin couldn't help but sigh.
"But that's what I thought we were doing already," said Pippin. "Entertaining you, I mean."
"Ah, but we want something better than that, Pippin. Don't we, Este? Surely, a hobbit of Merry's stature should leap at such a chance! An opportunity to charm too lasses, well, certainly the future Master wouldn't turn that aside!"
Merry, much to Alyssum's amusement, colored faintly, then turned away, coughing into his hand. Estella felt a smile tugging at her lips, and Pippin pinched Merry at the elbow, shaking his head.
"Am I losing you already?"
"Oh, shove it, Pip."
It's funny because you don't know why they were putting on their shirts. And Merry told Pippin to shove it. Heh heh heh.
