So I don't have an 11am class today. Am bored. Will spam you all with pictures of my last vaction, as I promised I would. Then I will have a nap.
Duluth is a city on Lake Superior. We here in Minnesota call taking a trip to Duluth "going to the north shore." Pretty much everyone does it, it's that awesome.
So here we have a picture of Duluth, about two blocks from the lake harbor. The whole city's built on hills, so you get all sorts of fun streets like this.
Duluth is probably most famous for it's lift bridge. It's the only functioning one of it's kind. Pretty, isn't it?
There's a small museum in Canal Park, where the lift bridge is. They hand out shipping schedules so you can stop by and see the bridge move. I believe that the ship under the bridge is a Vista Cruiser, which gives harbor tours ever three or four hours. It's a small boat, so the bridge only lifts halfway. But when you have a ship like this:
then the brige will lift all the way to the top. This particular ship is 1,000 feet long. She's a coal ship, stopping in Duluth to pick up a shipment to bring to Michigan. It takes three days on the lake to get there.
Here's another shot of the bridge. You can see the cement boardwalk that runs underneath it. I like to stand under the bridge when cars drive on it. They make a huge noise. Whooooooosh!
Here is a shot of Lake Superior from the top of Spirit Mountain, I believe. We started our vacation in a town called Lutsen, where there is good skiing in the winter. In the summer there is hiking, photography, horseback riding and the Alpine Slide. I think this post is getting long, so I'll put pictures of Lutsen and Gooseberry and the Alpine Slide up tomorrow, maybe. Anyway, the lake is huge, no? I wish I had a panoramic setting on my camera, because this is only a tiny fraction of what we could see from the mountain.
