I haven't read 'misconceptions' - I'll have to hunt it out and have a look.

Statistics tend to wash over me, but our doctor told us that the initial scan simply indicates the risk of having a baby with chromosomal abnormalities. A risk of 1 in 300 is considered 'high' and if you're considered high risk you're referred for an amnio, where I believe a needle is inserted into the uterus and some fluid is taken. There is more of a chance of the amnio causing a miscarriage than there is of them actually finding anything wrong. Neither my husband or I would consider terminating a pregnancy in any case, and any abnormality would be picked up in the next routine scan we'll have in a few months. Both of us agreed that if there is a problem we'd rather have time to prepare, than finding out first at the birth - but neither of us felt it important to go through all that stress and possible harm to know just yet.

One of my good friends conceived two weeks after me, and she has decided to have the test. Which I completely respect. Each to their own!
