Room 217, Thursday before classes

Johnny was pacing back and forth, pensive and thoughtful as he considered the creatures outside. It would be easy: he could torch them. All of them. The stench might be upsetting but that was little worry if Fandom became zombie free. Seriously. He was lacking in the torching things department and zombies are dead. They'd hardly feel a thing and be ( Read more... )

Savannah had only gone down to make sure her mom was okay before coming back to the room. Her face was pale and her eyes wider than usual when she came back into the room.

She tried to smile at Johnny, but it never quite reached her eyes. Swallowing hard, she went to their window to look out and see if she could see anything.

However, it wasn't long before staring out the window led to tears filling her eyes and spilling over.

She had listened to a download of last night's radio and managed to keep herself pulled together up until now.

Seeing her, he put Destiny down and stepped up behind her at the window. His arms went around her waist and he settled his chin on her shoulder. He had listened to radio too and though he didn't say anything yet, he simply kept his arms around her, doing what he could to comfort her.

"Sean," she finally said in a choked sob. "They got Sean." That was about as far as her ability to speak went right now.

"I know, baby," he murmured. "I know." And what else could he add to that? Sean was now the living dead and there was no hope for the living dead. Unless you were employed at Caritas and Sean wasn't.

Johnny wouldn't mention his thoughts to Savannah, because that would just be wrong.

"I should have... I should have..."

She should have, what? Gone to spend time with Sean yesterday? Been with him when he was attacked? Would that have helped or would she be like him now?

She turned in his arms to bury her face in his chest and wrap her arms around him.

He held her tightly. "Sweetheart, there is nothing you could have done. Don't... don't do this to yourself."

"What are we going to do, Johnny? These things are... and I'll have to tell Benicio what happened to Sean and..."

"I don't know yet," he said. "Torching them would work but I can't... torch people I know and... I couldn't do it."

"I'm scared," she finally admitted after a moment. "And... I can't hurt people I know, either." They were so alike in that.

He pulled back, cradling her face between his hands. "I'm here and you're strong and things will be all right. They always are." But he wasn't sure he was believing it in this case. "We'll go to class together and come right back here. We'll stay together, Savannah, and we will get through this."

He may not have believed it, but the fact of the matter was that he sounded like he believed it, so therefore, Savannah believed him.

"Okay," she said softly, her eyes fixed on his. "Together."

If she wasn't so concerned about their classmates and Abby Irene, she'd be tempted to ditch class.

So would he but he and Savannah were too much alike and thinking of other people after each other, came first, naturally.

"Promise me you won't go off anywhere without telling me, or allowing me to come with you?"

He didn't have to worry about that. She didn't want to let him out of her sight. "I promise."

"Thank you," he said, pushing hair back from her face. "Don't call Benecio yet, okay? Hold off for now, at least until something is figured out, or done. We don't know what's going to happen yet, Savannah."

She nodded. "All right. I'll wait to call him until... until we see what happens." She swallowed. "If I were to call him right now, he'd call Lucas and they'd be here to get me before classes were over."

His jaw set. "And I can't have that," he said, his tone low. "Even though part of me wonders if you'd be safer with them..."
