Just getting the word out to everyone who has asked me about getting a job at the Archive:
We are currently under a hiring freeze.
Microsoft has now pulled funding for book digitizing, and they made up 85% of our funding. My (and Beth's) job is safe, as there seems to be funding to last for at least a year, however they aren't hiring any new people until more funding is secured.
They don't seem to think this will take very long, especially for our scanning centre. We are the largest (and effectively only, really) book digitizing centre in Canada. Also, there were many libraries and other interests that either wouldn't deal with MS or we couldn't deal with because of the contract with MS with whom we can now work.
It's actually kind of exciting!
So, for anyone who saw the news about Microsoft pulling funding, not to worry!
The only thing that effects me, really, is that any day now they might stop approving over time. That time hasn't come yet (as I did 3.5 hours of it tonight!) but it might. So, I'm looking into other options for making a little extra money. I'm leaning heavily towards something crafty. Most of you know my various talents, so if you have any ideas I'd love to hear them. (As for the music thing, I've already ruled out teaching, but other musical avenues are still open, possibly.)
