I saw Chuck Palahniuk last night downtown. It was probably the best literary reading I'll ever attend. I brought Bonnie with me and there were a lot of people there. The auditorium only held 200 people though, and we all got these ticket stubs, so they started turning people away at 6:30 or so when it started at 7. To start off, he read "Guts", a short story that I had actually read six months ago on a community. It's here, though, if you want to read it. A teenage boy got up to leave but passed out at the door. A few more people got up and left. He says that the total number of people passing out from being disgusted is 60 so far. The Barnes and Nobles he was at the previous night, in Texas, filed 31 complaints after he left, supposedly.

I think if you've read his books and know at least a little bit about him, you'd expect something like that read. Some people sitting behind us were really rude. They didn't even know about half of his books. They talked the whole time and made fun of people's questions. But whatever.

His Q & A was really long and he gave those who asked questions amputated body parts, with fake blood and veins and bones. There were a lot of repetitive questions asked, unfortunately. He told us a lot of good things though. About how all of his books are stories from other people, that either he's friends with or he overhears. He talked about giving painkillers to boring people sitting next to him on long flights so that they'd liven up and tell stories. The stewardesses, however, are the most outrageous storytellers.

He said Choke is being made into a movie by "the Requiem for a Dream people" which I assume means Darren Aronofsky. I'm excited. His novel due next year is already 450 pages and are short stories that are based on what he thinks Edgar Allen Poe would write about today, or something like that.

Oh yeah, he doesn't look anything like the pictures of him in books. He looks different in every picture, actually, if you go to his site. He has this really nice voice and the way he said "fuck" was heart-stoppingly orgasmic. My crush is too huge now.
