Ficlet: rebellion

Wow - I'm away 24 hours and the comm explodes with Angel - so much happy reading to come! Anyway, here's my effort. A griffin seems like an odd tattoo for an angel-vampire - how did it happen? My answer: vamp adolescence.

ETA: and if you read the fascinating previous entries for this ep, it's not a griffin at all. Humour me - not like Angelus could check the work in detail...

Title: Rebellion
Rating: FRT
Pairing: Angelus/Darla
Author: Bruttimabuoni
A/N: Written for prompt #2, episode 7 ‘Angel’ at Phantasmagoria.

“Angelus? That’s a fairly soft sorta name you’re suggesting. Fluffy wings and a pearly halo aren’t my perfect style at all. Try again, my love.”

“Dear boy, you’ve a lot to learn. When I name you, it is your fate. Besides, it’s a perfectly delicious inversion. And I don’t see you as a Gabriel, after all. Perhaps Azrael, the angel of death. You’ve wrought such sweet slaughter already.”

Liam sulks. He’s not destroyed his tedious world to bow down unquestioning once more, no matter Darla’s power and attractions. Yet the accursed name sticks. He, in Angelus guise, writhes through introductions to the Order of Aurelius and many more over the months, loathing the softness of his Unchristian name.

When Darla abandons him for a time, to indulge herself in a small African war, his annoyance turns to active fury. He determines to undermine her edict; seeks an alternative in heroic myth. And finds a great beast, savage in claw, lion and eagle combined. Not a trace of softness in those wings. He has the image carved into his skin in a filthy sailors’ den and glories in the needle’s sting. Eternally and indelibly named.

Darla returning, though, is adamant. Never will she lay a finger on a “Griffin”. He is her Angelus, her boy. And he will obey her.

She weeps over his blemished back, blue lines marring his pale perfection. Then marks him further, knife and crop, till he accepts her mastery.
