Willow’s a good girl. It’s what she does. It’s how she lives. School is important. Grades matter. Understanding the principles of anatomy requires practical dissection. Oh yes. She can do this.

Deep breaths. Use that brain. Distance yourself.

She’s teaching a class. Professional, friendly tone to Xander. She’s presenting kids tv. See kids? Nothing to be scared of. The miracle of nature.

Besides, the frog is dead. No more leaping for this amphibian sucker.

She grasps the frog and plucks out its eyeball. Eye of newt. Huh. Maybe next time she’ll try playing a witch. That’ll help with the fear.

Did you know that if you scream for long enough you can’t hear yourself any more? Your own noisy pain blends into the background, as though you were at peace again.

But then no one else can hear me either, so I suppose it’s fair. Or do they just occasionally catch my scream as a tinny whisper, like the leaking of cheap earphones turned up too loud?

I guess it’s not so bad, as destinies go. No aging, no motherly drudgery, buns of literal steel. And that pose: a triumphant cheer held for eternity.

So why am I still screaming?
