Sunnydale Careers #102: An Occasional Series Getting Under the Skin of Our Community
A/N: Because I couldn’t resist prompt #2 in the end: How on earth did they manage to keep the incident at the Shopping Mall quiet?

Today, we’re talking to a freelance PR Executive…

I think the most important thing about this job is balance. The balance between public information and public panic, mainly. I’m freelance, and I go where the trouble is.

Did I say trouble? I meant *opportunity*.

I mean, everyone in Sunnydale knows things happen here. They just don’t really want to know what, or why. Sometimes you get a talker, who wants to ‘blow the lid off this whole situation’ but you know what? When they succeed, as they very occasionally do, most people won’t listen. It’s our job to keep the public comfortable; feed them just believable enough stories that they’ll sleep well at night. Like, a few weeks ago, the gas leak at the school. Now, they could have asked exactly what sort of gas produces mass slavery and how likely is it to leak into a school? But they didn’t.

So today’s little “pledging prank” won’t get much attention. Those crazy kids with their costumes and their fireworks. Of course, it’s very dangerous to use explosives in a confined space and we urge anyone with information on the perpetrators to come forwards…but basically, it was just kids. Again.
