Hi all:
My old ISP, Autobahn Access is about to close, although arrangements have been
made for people to keep their old E-mail addresses (this at first hadn't been
clear but has since been established) anyone including me who had web pages
(or redirectors to where their web pages moved to in my case) currently has
them offline and it's unclear whether they will be possible to re-establish
them. Thus leaving broken links all over the web on old web sites that aren't
regularily maintained but still run as they were left.
In the late 90s using their providers web space was the most common way people
put up their own web sites as most people didn't know much about domain names
when they first got on the net in those days and it was a no extra cost part
of most dial up plans.
In order to make these legacy web sites easier to find at wherever they move to
I am forming the Autobahn Access users group:
http://www.moonie.ca/autobahn/ At a minimum to help make people's web sites easier to find at their new URLs
I will put up links to any Autobahn members or former Autobahn members that
ask me to on the users group page.
Ideally I would like to rent the hostname (members.autobahn.mb.ca) from the
owners of the domain name (autobahn.mb.ca) so I can put up redirectors at
the old URLs for any former Autobahn Access members that want, thus no more
broken links. (Unless the domain owners make other accommodations on their own,
which they haven't given any sign of doing.)
However this is dependant on whether or not the owners of the domain name are
willing to co-operate and point the hostname at my server at a reasonable cost.
This remains to be seen as getting a reply from them is like pulling teeth.
They have already declined to sell me the whole domain name, though it took 2
E-mails to get them to respond to that much of a response with no elaboration
on the other issues.
Where you come in, is I would appreciate if any of you who have a facebook or
other blog read by Winnipegers if you could post a link to:
http://www.moonie.ca/autobahn/ and ask others who see it to do the same.
I figure the more Winnipegers I can reach the better chance of catching more
Autobahn Access members/former members who's web site or redirectors may be
affected.
I should note that the owner of les.net who has been running the customer
service and dial up pool for Autobahn Access for about 2 years now has been
about as helpful as he can but since he doesn't own the domain name he's been
limited in what he can do by the original owners.
If you don't have a facebook or other blog site forwarding this on to other
Winnipegers who do would also be helpful.
Thanks in advance to anyone who helps.
Darn! I just realized this is the 2nd year in a row I made a post about
something closing on Jan. 9th! :-O
