Jared's performance during Sam's conversation with Max is subtle but superb. Throughout the scene, the central focus is on Max and what we're learning about his past, but in Jared's reaction shots we can see everything that Sam is thinking and feeling: the initial tension and anxiety from being alone with a dangerous and unpredictable psychic, his shock when he learns the full extent of Max's suffering, identifying with the young man because of the similarities in their circumstances, then deeply sympathizing with him for the differences, those things Max has suffered that Sam has been spared.
And then, Sam's face when Max reveals how his mother died:
