Today Was My Day to Get Stuff Done

Oct 10, 2014 22:08

Don't get the wrong idea: I didn't actually do stuff myself. I stood around and watched other people do things that I had planned and organized but don't have to skill set to implement. Nevertheless, I am allowing myself a glow of accomplishment.

I finally got Clayton and Lou, my handyman and his assistant, over to install a toilet paper dispenser in my powder room. I didn't know what I wanted and didn't want to mess up my new wall tiles installing something I ended up disliking. What I got is fairly vanilla so it should age well:

Not to worry: we haven't been doing without toilet paper for six months. The room is tiny, so balancing a roll on the sink left it within easy reach of anyone seated on the commode.

Clayton thought it should have been a little lower, but I felt that people would then bang into it with their knees. Lou is too inexperienced to have an opinion. (Such a nice young man!)

Clayton and Lou then went up to my third floor bedroom and rehung my sconces. They bracket my bed, convenient for reading before shutting off the light, even more convenient for shutting off said light without getting out of bed.

I thought the sconces had gotten loose because my son, David, used the wrong sort of screws. Clayton explained that the wall in question is composed of 3/8th inch wall board, then a tiny gap (1/8th inch?), then the firewall (mortar) between my ho use and my neighbor's. David would have been expecting a larger gap, and he would have used molly bolts. Alas, there is no room for the 'wings' of the molly bolts to expand.

Clayton rehung the sconces using mortar bolts drilled into the mortar. "Those sconces aren't ever coming down, Nancy."

Yay! I have items I want to add to the array on the wall with the sconces, but I've been holding off until I was sure the sconces were in their final home:

The sconces are white with a white design; you can see the one on the left best.

Everything in the array is a souvenir or reminder of my travels...well, except the sconces. They are a reminder of how much of my home décor I've bought at Ikea.

Shortly after Clayton and Lou left, my son John arrived to put up another picture array on the wall next to the steps up to the second floor. Like most mothers and grandmothers, I have way too many family pictures hung here and there or standing on shelves. This summer I started rounding them up and taking them around the corner to be framed in identical black frames. I picked up the last of them in August, but it's taken until now, the second week in October, to get John over here with his super-duper level and his meticulous measuring and hammering.

With this picture, you get, thrown in for free and gratis, a selfie or two.

There is still room for more family pictures, as you can see, including one from the Wedding of the Century; i.e., my grandson's movie-style wedding in June. I'm going to look for the studio picture my brother had taken of his family a few years ago, too.

I did do a few more things myself. I ironed. I walked down to 11th and Washington Avenue and picked up a delivery at an Amazon locker. I made dinner. I watched Project Runway On Demand.

It was a lot for one day. FanSee
