Under the sun!

It was another beautiful, sunshiny day in the neighborhood on the island. Alanna was beginning to wonder if the weather ever changed. Not that she was complaining. Far from it.

After a rather rough morning (that lovely encounter with Thomas, surgery to correct some faulty wiring in her arm...) she wanted to just relax. This time, she had made sure ( Read more... )

Smoker will be your neighbor~ smokintongue May 27 2009, 14:55:34 UTC
Smoker came walking out of the waters and onto the beach carrying his latest catch. He was going to share it with his new friend the odd hunter named Thomas, but he noticed the girl who scolded him from last time.

Not knowing that she was asleep he noisily dropped the giant fish next to her.

Alanna woke with a start. "Ah! Hi Smoker, you... HOLY MOLA!" She looks at the fish with amazement. "Wow, that's awesome! You got the largest bony fish in the ocean on your first trip!" She laughs, patting the mola mola.

He nodded then plopped down on the sand.

"You first."

He wanted to know how to eat these things after all. Just don't mind him as he spits up all the water, and a crab, he swallowed while he was underwater 8D

"Oh, thanks," Alanna says, whipping out a knife she had brought along for coconuts. She sawed open the side and flipped back the skin to reveal the internal organs. "Unfortunately, these guys aren't very good for eating. Their livers are poisonous since they're related to blowfish, and their digestive tracts tend to be riddled with parasites. The head and fins are good when they're cooked, though, and..."

Here she paused to dig around its organs with her hand. She scooped out a fair amount of white, lumpy flesh and laid it on the skin flap. "I hear this stuff tastes just like lobster!"

The Smoker just watches confused. He never really put thought into his meals, he just searched them out, then ate. He wanted to take some and eat now, but he also wanted to know what this cooking process was. So he just sat and listened carefully.

"And lobster is... good?"

"Lobster is really good," Alanna explained. "It's a sea bug that lives in holes underneath rocks. What's amazing is that they weren't really eaten until the mid-19th century." She built a fire and brought a pot and some water out from the hotel, and a frying pan. When the fire was ready, she boiled the fish, then fried it with some seasoning.

"It's ready!" She offered him some first. It was his fish, after all.

[He curiously took some of the fish and ate it, it was okay he supposed. A poor substitute for his real food, and it wasn't even that filling. He sighed. He knew he didn't have a choice in the matter anyways.

Alanna tilted her head. "Hm. Well, not everyone likes fish. Perhaps you'd like pork better? They're much closer to people... I hear." She made herself tack that on at the end, even though she knew what a person tasted like, because... ugh... bad memories... But her effort was in vain.

Sindhian funerals, man... she thought with a shiver as she involuntarily remembered the taste. I get how emotional and sacred the ceremony is to them, and I certainly tried my hardest to respect that family's culture and their loved one... but still... that was definitely one experience I could have lived my life without having.

He shrugged and kept eating the fish. Somehow, deep down, he knew it didn't matter what they tried to give him... it would never be the same. It would always taste dull... He didn't want to be 'stopped' though. He wanted to learn these knew things about the warm bodied creatures, like he had been since his arrival here. He found them to be quite interesting.
