For me and CJ
Characters: Saria and Tsukasa
Keywords: Tree, Little Drummer Boy
Saria was as giddy as a school girl that evening. Tsukasa was spending the night with her, studying for all the tests that were being crammed in before break. That would have been a fine enough way to spend the evening, but then her host father came home from work, surprising the whole family with a brand new artificle Christmas tree that was as tall as he was.
Ever since Saria had heard about the concept of Christmas trees, she was excitedly waiting for the day Akito Seiji would bring one home. She almost wanted a real one instead, but it would have been depressing to watch it dry up over the days. And the one her poppa got was beautiful. As they set it up it looked quite handsome in the corner they designated for it.
The entire family pitched in decorating it. Akito and Laura strung up the lights and the garland, while Tsukasa and Saria hung up the ornaments; glass balls, candy canes, snowflakes, they even found some fairy ornaments that Saria gladly placed around the tree.
Their work had long been completed, and after quick goodnight kisses and a reminder not to stay up too late, the host parents had gone upstairs to bed, and Saria and Tsukasa now sat on the couch together, dreamily watching the blinking lights sillhouette the ornaments of the ornaments onto the walls.
Tsukasa was almost asleep, leaning against the arm of the couch, and holding Saria close under his chin, petting her hair. He thought at first that she was asleep herself, but in the silence he suddenly heard her faintly humming something.
"...Saria?" he asked after a moment, curious.
"Hmm?" came the drowsy reply, the kokiri girl shifting a little in an attempt to look up at him.
"What was that you were humming? It sounded pretty."
"Oh, I was humming that?" Saria asked a little sheepishly. She was so spaced out she didn't realise she was voicing the song in her head. Then after a moment she shifted, getting comfortable and snuggling up to him more. "It's just a Christmas carol Poppa taught me. I really like it."
"I'd like to hear it."
"Eh? Right now? But Momma and Poppa are asleep!"
"You can sing it quietly, can't you?" Tsukasa insisted, no pushy tone in his voice, just hopeful, "Please? It makes me happy to hear you sing."
That, inevitably, caused Saria to blush. But she always was a sucker for his compliments, and she liked making him happy. So she readjusted again, so she now lay on her back, head against his chest. Watching the lights on the tree, she took Tsukasa's hand, moving it to drape around her, and then she hugged his arm lightly and sang softly. It was difficult, but she managed, some of her notes barely a whisper. And the lights seemed to flicker in time, adding to the mood.
Come they told me, pa rum pum pum pum
A new born King to see, pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring, pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King, pa rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,
So to honor Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
When we come.
Baby Jesus, pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum
That's fit to give the King, pa rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,
Shall I play for you, pa rum pum pum pum,
On my drum?
Mary nodded, pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my best for Him, pa rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum,
Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum.
Tsukasa smiled, petting Saria's hair again with his free hand.
"That's beautiful."
Saria nodded in agreement, shifting once again to lie on her side, looking up at him.
"I've only heard small pieces of Jesus's whole story...but I think that boy in the song...the little drummer boy...I think he gave him the best present of all."
"You think so?"
Saria nodded again.
"Un. The three kings gave him all those symbolic presents...but the little drummer boy gave him something simple...a real birthday present that a baby would love. That's what I would give somebody for their birthday, if I had nothing else..."
Tsukasa smiled, nuzzling her hair.
"Little Ocarina Girl doesn't quite sound the same, though."
"Heehee, that's true." Saria giggled, settling against him some more, wrapping her arms around the albino, growing a little sleepy and dreamy again, "Maybe I'll play my ocarina for my baby brother when he's born."
"I'm sure he would like that." Tsukasa replied. And with that, he brushed his pale finger against her cheek lightly, kissing her once on the forehead just below her hairline, and they both lay in calm silence, the dancing shadows on the walls lulling them to sleep.
