I made a momentous realization today, and when you read this you are going to let out a huge DUH, FANNISHLISS!!! but I am just this backward.
Two things happened. 1) Some kind soul came across my two most explicit Sam/Dean stories and left me glowing comments, which I really appreciated. 2) I read a story about a woman who was making poor choices in the stock market -- she was buying stocks on their way down, which is not what you do -- to play stocks, you buy what is popular -- that's how it works.
So then my brain put these two things together and I made this realization:
Readers may SAY they want Bechdel stories about Women Characters, but what they REALLY want is stories about Sam and Dean.
DUH, FANNISHLISS!!!
o_O
I mean, it's not really going to change what I write or what I think about or the projects I want to write. I am genuinely interested in the backstories of the women who appear on spn, and if I have a coda in my head that is about samndean I'll still write it. But I am also dedicated, personally, to writing women characters, and that's just facts. But maybe it'll free me up a little in my expectations, since I'm currently writing a story about Jodie Mills and Marcy and their budding friendship -- that's not the stuff of comment avalanche, and I'll just face facts.
You may in fact write it, yet still they will not come.
Quality and originality matter, but so does satisfying the social contract.
Also, halfamoon is NOT ENOUGH. --good start! but not by a long shot--
Thanks, flist, for every story of mine that you take time to read. I know they're not the most exciting things in the world, but every comment I receive really matters to me. I always welcome suggestions of applicable comms, though most of my stories don't fit comfortably anywhere that I know of.
ROCK ON! \o/
