I HAVE GERBILS TO GIVE AWAY!
In June I received two gerbils. They turned out to be male and female, and in late October they had their first litter of 3 boys and 3 girls. It was so wonderful to see the papa gerbil take such good care of his offspring, sitting in the nest and keeping them warm while the mama ran around.
I had to separate them, but not in time to prevent a second litter. So now, Battu lives in his tank with his three grown boys (it is so sweet to see him build them a beautiful nest and he still sits on top of them all night to keep a lookout) and Borishka lives in her tank with her one grown daughter (I gave two girls to my sister at Christmas time) and her new litter of five.
The new litter was born on 3 January, so they are 2010 babies. Baby gerbils are born blind and naked, but they develop very rapidly. They are already fully furred, with their tiny claws and their beautiful tails, but as of today their eyes are still closed. Nevertheless, they like to charge at top speeds around the tank. My gerbils are hand tamed, which means I pull the little guys out of the tank and handle them very gently so that they trust human hands.
It is just a joy to watch them. Sariah, the big sister, is very careful with them and sits on the next when Borishka runs around. Sariah herself is a beautiful gerbil, the runt of the last litter, so she is about half the size of Borishka and is a beautiful silvery gray. Borishka is black with white under her chin. Battu, is silver nutmeg, a gorgeous sandy color pattern that sadly none of his offspring have inherited.
At this moment Sariah has all five babies in the nest and Borishka is out having a Square. In the gerbil food, there is a little beige Square that Borishka loves. When she holds it in her hands and eats, it looks exactly like she is eating a pbj. :) Borishka is eating for herself and five babies, so she eats a lot. She is also very thirsty, which you will remember if you have ever breast fed. :)
OFFER: If anyone would like a pair or trio of boys (or girls), these gerbils will be ready to leave their family in a month or so. I'm willing to drive within a two hour radius of BWI (remember where we had wincon?) :) to deliver the gerbils to you. They are truly wonderful pets, very curious, cute and sweet, and they are all hand tamed. The gerbils on offer are black.
Your setup costs include a ten-gallon aquarium with gerbil proof lid (we bought one lid that was ready with tube holes, and made one out of hardward cloth, so it's up to you). The gerbils need a small amount of fresh water to be available, they need food, and they need carefresh bedding (a recycled paper product). They also like to chew hay, I've discovered. Tubes are also adored by gerbils -- we like crittertrail the best.
If you would like to offer your gerbil testimonials in comments, I'd love to hear them! Also let me know if you are interested in adopting a set of gerbils (I prefer to give away the boys, once we know which ones they are, and the girls can probably stay with Borishka and Sariah). They are not sexed yet, but there are most likely 2 or 3 boys.
YAY GERBILS!!
