Yeah, driving a manual car in England is a real mind bender with that stick shift in the left hand instead of your right, isn't it! What's even worse is when the first time you do it, you get a car that has tiny divisions between the "gates" for each gear. That is, they are so thin that it's so easy to go into 1st gear when you want 3rd, etc. etc.
Fortunately, the second time I had a car with much better spacing. Still smaller, but not micro-thin. I picked that second one up in Cambridge. Maybe the cars in Exeter are contrary by nature...
Yes, the car had SIX gears and first and third were RIGHT next to each other. We normally drive stick but this was a whole nother ballgame (cricket I think). We set up a little cheer for whenever we successfully shifted into third instead of first. :P
Definitely will get Sat Nav next time. It's a huge help, plus she shows you a diagram for going through the roundabout.
Plus we really had no idea how to get into downtown Cardiff and almost missed our ticket window for the Dr. Who Experience!!
Talking of tiny roads, I get so frustrated with all the parked cars everywhere in England, it's ridiculously unsafe having to drive up a hill on the wrong side of the road because of the long line of parked cars! I'm so jealous when I see the lovely spacious roads on American tv shows, I feel like I'm manoeuvring around an obstacle course half the time here

Deirdre was a lovely guide, directing us through roundabouts like a champ. :)

The London A-Zed is a weighty tome. We only had a little one for the central parts of the city.
