I wasn't familiar with any of this backstory/worldbuilding, but it's all very intriguing! And your story has a lovely flow to it.

Thanks so much for your lovely comments!

As for the backstory, it's incredibly difficult to piece together. This is just my take on it, being fairly obsessed with the backtime as I am, and the origins of Gallifreyan mental powers, especially their telepathy, which seems to me to have been a radical factor in the shaping of their culture.

If you want to read further, you might try to find an etext of Marc Platt's novel Lungbarrow (it is very expensive in print), and also his crazy book Cat's Cradle: Time's Crucible. Both deal in part with the backtime and the Doctor's experiences there. Time's Crucible, especially, deals with Rassilon's earliest experiments with Time Travel, and is fascinating.

Another key bit is the Fourth Doctor/Sarah Jane story, the Brain of Morbius, which takes place on Karn. Everyone is probably watching this now because of Night of the Doctor. :D

I liked this very much - lots of references I didn't understand ('looms'?) and it was obviously answering questions I don't know enough to ask, but the general tone of the culture and the characters was beautifully conveyed, and convincing. I really liked seeing the First Doctor as a gentle, desirable sexual being (because that's so counter to the way I've ever seen him before!) and the wonderfully (semi-clashing?) sense of house and family here - and especially I loved the glimpse of 'Susan', who is someone far too much glossed over and dismissed in the television series as I know it. Loved her eagerness and joy in life. :)

Thanks so much for braving through all the unfamiliar stuff. My emphasis is always on the Doctor we know and love. He can be a little different from life to life, but I wanted to reach back and find the core of that character that we know so well in the first Doctor. ...I've enjoyed those little hints in New Who when he mentions his family on Gallifrey. You can tell how much he loved them.... there's almost no mention of Susan's Grandmother anywhere. So I had to invent her out of what we know about Old Gallifrey. I'm so glad it held together for you! :)

This was really well done. Often times, I don't think the alien nature of the Doctor or the Time Lords gets touched upon enough, but this story does just that and leaves you feeling just uncomfortable enough that you are reminded that the people you are reading about are not human. An interesting look at what might have been in the past.

Thanks so much for your great comment, I really appreciate it.

I do read great stories that I really enjoy, but where the Doctor just doesn't seem alien enough. :)

Gallifreyans are fascinating and disturbing, so I'm really glad that worked for you!

Pretty neat. I've skimmed enough of... uh... what's that one website that tries to document all events ever described in all DW media and does it in an eye-straining combination of color-coded text?.. well anyway, to know what you're talking about with Looms and the Pythia and all, so this was a cool take on that.

Yes, I totally know that website! :D

The backtime is a fascinating concept. I've been holding off on watching the current XII era... but last night, finally broke down and watched "Into the Dalek." XII reminds me so much of One. And then too, that particular ep refers so explicitly to "Genesis of the Daleks." So now I'm much more excited about watching the new era.

But I still doubt if anyone will ever take up the mantle of the Cartmel plan.... though wouldn't it be great if Gallifrey would finally return and those types of things could be explored again! :)

I especially love the Sisterhood of Pythia/Karn. And it was great that we got to see Rassilon when he was trying to bring Gallifrey through via the Master (tho that was pretty confusing). :)
