New Gerbil Joy

Today my son and I went to choose new gerbils from a big rescue. There had been a study at a local university involving 80 gerbils and they all went into rescue at once, so the call went out for friends of gerbils to come and adopt. The study was about how much oxygen a gerbil uses and how much CO2 it puts out, so the gerbils weren't scarred like Richard Adams plague dogs or anything. They were multigenerational gerbils of both sexes in many different ages. There are still gerbils available, so if you live in the area, you can contact homewardtrails dot org or smallangels dot org.

We ended up choosing three lively young brothers who are very sweet and engaging little creatures. They are all spotted with a lot of white on them.

We have a method of asking gerbils questions, kind of like a ouija board. "If you want a Mongolian name, stand up." Gerb #1, a ruby eyed ginger, stood up, and received the name of Naranbattar, Sun Hero -- but we seem to be calling him Sunshine or Sunny. Gerbs 2 & 3 stayed down, so we assumed they wanted American names. "Do you want warrior names, or peaceful names?" They stayed down, so we assumed they wanted peaceful names. Thus the two very similar looking tan and white gerbils received the names Armstrong and Aldrin, because they are Peaceful Science Heroes. Armstrong is slightly smaller, with a smaller blaze on his forehead, and Aldrin is beefier with a bigger blaze and a few black whiskers.

We are so excited and happy to have new gerbils in the house. Donny is with-holding judgment (he is the older gerbil living in the next tank over from these rambunctious youngsters). He is in his nest trying to sleep while the new gerbs dig and rustle and explore.

BTW John Watson is an amazing Bilbo. He is perfect. Yay Martin Freeman!
