In response to this:
So I'm wondering: for those of you who write fic, what's a piece that remains special to you - whether it got a response from your fandom(s) or not - and why? Link us to the fic and tell us … whatever you like! What you were trying to "do" with the writing, how you were motivated to write it, whether it affected your impression of the characters. Tell us why you love it, whether anyone else does or not.
My
Dark of the Stars fics. They are about Revan and Malak of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and some OCs of the survivors of the ancient Sith as how I see them. The series of fics are set about a decade before the events of the Knights of the Old Republic.
Here are the links:
Dark of the Stars: Prelude I Dark of the Stars Dark of the Stars II Dark of the Stars III Dark of the Stars IV Dark of the Stars: Interlude part 1 Dark of the Stars V, part 1 of 2 Dark of the Stars V, part 2 of 2
Dark of the Stars VI, part 1 of 2 Dark of the Stars VI, Part 2 of 2 Dark of the Stars VII I loved the xbox game, Knights of the Old Republic (KotOR), and the two main characters, Revan and Malak quickly became my all time favorite characters. I wrote a lot of half finished fics about those two, all of which I have distilled down to the WIP I am working on now. And, being the way that I am, I added in OCs for the concepts and meta of a little understood species, the ancient Sith.
I wanted to explore and present the Sith in a different light that what seems to be generally accepted about them, as nothing more than a race of Dark Jedi promoting the Dark Side. And I felt story of Revan and Malak and their rise to power as Dark Lords in turn meshed in well with the Sith that I present, considering that Knights of the Old Republic was inspired by the old Dark Horse comics that had originally introduced the ancient Sith Lords and the time of Exar Kun that was only 40 years before the events shown in Knights of the Old Republic.
I wanted to explore the long term effects of history and warfare as I understand them, because I saw that whoever wrote KotOR had a knowledge of WWI and WWII and had parallels of those global wars in their theme of continued galactic warfare from one era to the next.
Also, there are scenarios of the Jedi, and the question arises of how responsible they are really for a lot that goes on in the galaxy, such as the ancient Sith who had been dominated and exploited by fallen Jedi that the Jedi Order had exiled and let roam free in the galaxy. And what of the Jedi that may have actually produced Jedi that eventually corrupted. It includes some looks at the Jedi Code.
Plus there is another theme of mind tampering of the main character, Revan, that story and its sequels never really address.
There are sequels to the Knights of the Old Republic, and retcon, but I feel that they do not adequately question, explore, and answer the themes of KotOR itself; thus, more fanfic.
I was at first reluctant to post these fics because I had learned a little over a year ago about a rather judgemental label in the fandoms known as "Mary Sue," which, from my perception, seems to be targetted against any interesting female OC. Because I do have a female character, Kali Raya, who isn't going to be a bland bakground character with mousy hair and dull eyes just to make others feel comfortable.
She will interact in later installments of my fics with the main characters, and offer her point of view which comes from the ancient Sith and how they view the galaxy and the Jedi.
I am very pleasantly surprised at how popular she is with those who read my fics, and that is very satisfying.
Dark of the Stars is an introductory series of my fics, getting a feel for the characters, and setting them on their respective paths.
I did understand the character of Alek more after writing about him, why he made the decisions he did that led him towards becoming later on the main villain, Darth Malak, of the Knights of the Old Republic (the main boss fight.)
Later, in a new series, the characters will have more interaction.
