I just replaced my ancient laptop last week, so when this question from
tom_gallier came in yesterday, it seemed too serendipitous not to use immediately.
I just bought a new laptop. Since it is now my best computer, I've decided to try writing on it instead of the desktop and just use the desktop for the internet (and thus protecting my writing computer from viruses).
This made me think -- do most writers write on laptops or desktops. I swear, I see people constantly writing about their laptops. I would think a desktop easier to use, but it appears at least that laptops are the computer of choice. Also, it would be nice to hear why they chose a laptop over a desktop.
Notice I didn't mention Mac vs PC? That like asking someone their politics are religion. LOL
To a lot of writers, a computer is like a close friend (or maybe "frenemy" is a more accurate term). We stare at it probably more than we do at any one human being in our lives. It's there when the magic happens and the words flow, and it's there, waiting patiently, when ideas just won't come. It distracts us with games, plays our favorite music, and connects us to people we've never met, It's no wonder that some of us (*whistles innocently*) name our computers the way we would name a pet.
In deciding the desktop vs. laptop question, is it a matter of ergonomics, economics, or convenience? Have you made the switch from one to the other, and if so, have you noticed a change in your writing habits? More or less efficient? More or less creative?
Expanding beyond this question, do you use nothing but computers in your writing, or do you also employ pen and paper? When you do so, is it out of necessity (like standing in line at the post office), or is it a purposeful choice to stimulate your brain in a different way?
As always, leave your thoughts in the comments and Members and Watchers alike are welcome to share.
Have a great week, and may your computers--be they laptops or desktops, PC's or Macs--behave their little silicon selves!
