Topic of the Week - Time of the Season
Before I get to this week's Topic, I wanted to announce that next Monday will probably have no Topic of the Week, since the world goes into near stasis between Christmas and New Year's.
Speaking of which, this week's Topic is...holidays! And if any of my SFNovelist friends are watching, your sense of deja vu is correct: this is a condensed rewrite of a post I did on that blog last month. I am plagiarizing myself (and it feels pretty good).
Anyway...
Do you incorporate our society’s holidays into your work and put a new twist on them for your characters’ unique world and attributes? Or does that reek of “A Very Special Episode of [cheesy sitcom]”? What about invented holidays and festivals?
More generally, how do you choose the time of year in which to set your novels? Have you ever started writing a novel set in one season and then changed it when you realized another would serve the story better?
