From Misery Loves Company

“Good morning, Misery.” Michael’s tones caressed my name, turning my knees rubbery. What was this? Old romances come out of the woodwork day? He strode closer, a tall slender form, all brightness and light from golden skin to white blonde hair. The last time I had seen Michael we’d been armored and screaming curses at each other across a body strewn field, stained with blood and the heat of combat. In comparison he looked sedate and unthreatening, hands tucked into the pockets of his khakis and a gold cross glittering where it lay at the hollow of his throat, framed by the open collar of his shirt.

Samuel scowled, not impressed in the slightest, which told me it wasn’t the first time he’d seen Michael. Mortal eyes couldn’t help but look at Michael and see the angelic aura he wore. Think of meeting the best priest you know, someone who is truly devoted to the work and to the people around him and magnify it about a million times and that’s Michael. I’d seen people run across an eight lane freeway just to bask in his presence. It used to impress me and now it makes me want to hurl. How times have changed.
