(I really just wanted to see how many 'M' words I could put in that title.)
So, how did I pick succubi to write about? Well, I didn't, really. Mine aren't the traditional, soul-stealing succubi. They're not demons. Mine are more like...sex vampires. Some vampires need blood to survive, my girls need a nice romp in the sack to fuel their engines.
With that spin, I wanted to go a bit further. Most vampires are super-strong. I made my gal an immortal, but she's a tremendously wussy one. She has very few special powers and no super-strength to speak of. I wanted a heroine that COULDN'T kick everyone's butt (like Buffy), but was a normal gal thrown into a crazy world where she had to use her brain to get out of sticky situations. And sure, there are guns and high-speed chases and the like...but Jackie's not very good at any of them, much to her chagrin.
For more spin, I wanted to play with the concept of the 'hot' immortal. Vampires are normally dark and sexy - I wanted to build on that. Jackie (my heroine) is a nerd who works at a museum and wears coke-bottle glasses and sweatpants...until she's transformed. And when the transformation turns her into a hot babe, she learns that it causes a lot more problems than it solves. For one, guys never seem to look her in the eye anymore, and she loses credibility at her very serious job.
So my monster choice wasn't a specific 'Ooo I love this creature!' choice, but rather a decision to take one of the normal concepts (in this case, Buffy-like heroines and sexy vampires) and spin it a little. :)
It was fun, at any rate.
