Weaving through the halls, Sanada could sense Kage at his heels. He felt terrible for neglecting his pets, especially Six, who was still so new. Thankfully, things with the pack were quiet at the the moment, meaning nothing bad would happen if he didn’t jump right on all the papers piling up around his office. Pushing open his youngest pet’s door, the vampire slipped inside. “Six, I’m here.”

Ohtori had been woken up in the middle of the day yesterday with a low fever and severe nausea but had managed to make it through the nighttime chores, his regular duties and tending to one grumpy cat and three spoiled wolves before sneaking off for what was meant to be a short nap, that had been yesterday. Tonight, though, he was jarred awake by a sudden inexplicable pain in his abdomen unlike anything he had ever felt before. Moving to stand and make sure the wolves were tended to, he doubled over in pain again and had since been unable and unwilling to move, even now that he knew Sanada was coming into his room. Curling up tighter on the bed, he whimpered an apology to the vampire about not starting his chores.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, Sanada gently laid his hand on Six’s forehead. “You’re burning up. Hold a moment, I need to call for the doctor.” reaching into his obi, the vampire pulled out his cell and began scrolling through the contacts list. There was one doctor that the clan used to take care of their human pets, and the former Samurai kept his number close at hand. While waiting for the doctor to pick up, he looked back down at Six. “When did you start feeling ill?”

Ohtori knew he was feverish, his forehead was wet with sweat, but he felt cold and couldn't stop shivering a bit. Closing his eyes again, he thought about it, amazed he hadn't been ratted out for skipping yesterday's dinner and all of the meals today. "I don't like doctors," he mumbled almost childishly before trying to think, "I started feeling queasy yesterday...around lunch."

“And when did the pain the start?” Pulling the blankets up around the boy a bit more, Sanada carded his fingers gently through sweat slicked hair. He relayed what he knew to the doctor when the aging human answered.

"Most of the day but then it got really bad....and so I went to bed....and then it started to go away and..." He fought to keep the scared tremor out of his voice as he talked, but was failing horribly. "And now it hurts so bad...I just....I want to die."

“You won’t die. The doctor is on his way now, you’re his number one priority as a patient. He’ll take good care of you.” Hanging up, Sanada slipped his phone back into his obi. He laid a hand on the back of Six’s neck to try and help soothe the fever the human was suffering from. “You may end up in the hospital, though. But that’s ok, I’d rather have you there being cared for than to see you get worse. One has already been seeing that the pups get fed, so you needn't worry.”

Ohtori's eyes widened at the mention of a hospital, shaking his head, he attempted to sit up and promise he wasn't that bad, but the pain made him curl back into a ball. "Please no- I - I can't do hospitals- they're..." Scary, gross, filled with pain and misery. "I am sure I'll feel better if I sleep more..."

Sanada frowned softly, leaning down to press his nose to Six’s temple. “I know this smell, and if I am right, you do need a hospital. Staying here and trying to will yourself better could kill you, Six.” Where was that damn doctor at?

Ohtori was about to argue that he would be fine again when his stomach lurched and he pulled away, grabbing the nearby trash container to be sick in, hugging it to his chest like a lost lover and wretching into it.

Frowning more, Sanada helped support the trash bin with one hand as his other softly stroked Six’s back. Before he could say more, and older gentleman burst into the room before pausing to catch his breath. “Sanada-sama, I came as quickly as I could.”

“I’m not a man of medicine as you are, but he smells very sick. It has been a very long time, but could it be his appendix?” There was a heavy thread of worry in the vampire’s voice as he looked up at the doctor.

Standing upright, the human scowled in concern. “That is entirely possible. I’d need to get him back to the hospital to be absolutely sure. If it’s already burst, the surgery will take more time to recover from.”

"No-" Ohtori whimpered again, giving Sanada an imploring look, much more so than any other time in the past. "Can't I please just stay here?! I promise I won't die..."

Chuckling softly, the doctor set his bag down and pulled out a few things. Sticking the thermometer in Six’s ear, he shook his head at how high the boy’s temperature was before grabbing a blood pressure cuff and his stethoscope. “Can you lay back down for me, young man?”

Hesitantly releasing his trash can, Ohtori slowly laid back, wincing at the pain of stretching his stomach muscles and the slight but obvious swelling on his stomach. It was so strange having this doctor also aware of vampires, the network Yukimura had mentioned before must be bigger than he thought.

After taking Six’s pulse and blood pressure, the doctor began prodding gently at his slightly swollen stomach. “I must say, Sanada-sama, I think you were right. From the look of this swelling, his appendix has already burst. I need to get him into surgery soon so he doesn’t go septic.”

Sanada nodded from his spot next to the bed. He had relinquished his seat to the doctor, knowing the human would be able to tend to his pet better than he could. “Will he need an ambulance, or can I drive him myself?”

Amadeus, sensing something was amiss was shooting dangerous looks at the men bothering his human, but seeing his human in a near panic caused the fat tuxedo cat to arch his back and hiss at the pair before yowling a warning.

"It's ok Amadeus....I'm sure I'll be right back..." Ohtori mumbled, petting the cat and trying to keep his obvious panic under wraps.

“Your own car should be fine.” The doctor was working on packing his tools away before glancing over at Sanada. “I’ll go on ahead and get everything ready, but don’t take too long.”

Nodding as the older man left the room, Sanada turned to look at his young pet. “I’ll be right back, I just need to let one of the others know that I’m taking you to the hospital. Once we’re there, I’ll set up protection for you in case of crazed fans or over-zealous hunters.”

Watching the doctor leave, Ohtori buried his face against Amadeus's side, mumbling reassurances more for himself but toward the cat and trying to hide the rapidly welling tears in his eyes. Eventually looking up, he shook his head, "I am sure the fans wouldn't do anything and- and the hunter that had me said I made my choice being here and he'd respect it..."

“That hunter might respect your choice, but that’s not to say others would do the same. I’ll make sure your cat is cared for while you’re in the hospital, which shouldn’t be more than a few days. You’ll have a big scar from it, though.” Stroking the young man’s hair softly, Sanada smiled reassuringly before leaving the room for a few moments. When he returned, he was in more modern clothing carrying a fresh blanket. “Here, I thought you’d like one that you hadn’t soaked with fever sweat. We should get going before you get worse.”

In the short time that Sanada had vanished, Ohtori had managed to put on a clean shirt and some pajama pants he had left at his sister's when he went to retrieve his cat, he could deal with being out of his uniform later if he survived. He hastily scrawled a note about his beloved cat's care and what he had taught the wolves. Looking at Sanada, he nodded meekly and forced himself to slowly walk toward the other, grimacing with each laborious step.

Wrapping the blanket around Six’s shoulders, Sanada gently picked the boy up princess style. “Is this more comfortable?”

Releasing a startled sound at the sudden change in his position, he mumbled softly that everything was painful right now before simply letting the vampire carry him.

Hurrying to his car, Sanada set his charge inside as gently as possible. Getting behind the wheel, he headed straight for the hospital. “You’ll feel right as rain after your appendix is out, I promise.”

"Ok-" Ohtori mumbled again, huddled in a coccoon he made of the blanket with his eyes closed tight, concentration on not throwing up on the car again. "A-are you sure about this, Sanada-sama?"

“Sure about what? Making sure you’re at your best? I take my responsibilities as your master very seriously, you know. Keeping my pets healthy and happy is incredibly important.” Glancing at Six from the corner of his eye, Sanada kept his voice soft and soothing. He tried to keep to as few stops as possible, knowing that the stop and start sensation wouldn’t help his pet’s stomach at all.

Nodding, Ohtori remained silent for the rest if the trip with the exception of the odd pained gasp. Once they reached the hospital, he looked nervously at the sign and exhaled, slowly stepping out of the car.

Coming around the car, Sanada put an arm around Six to support him. As soon as they stepped through the door, there was a nurse already waiting for them with a wheelchair. Lowering Six down into it, the vampire gave a shallow bow to the nurse as she whisked his pet away to prep him for surgery.

While he was afraid, Ohtori was a very polite and well behaved patient, obeying every request and quietly answering each question. Soon he was situated on a surgical table, the oxygen on a slow feed and the fluid in the IV making him eventually slip into unconsciousness as they began the process of removing the devastated organ and a massive cyst caused by the infection growing when the appendix had ruptured. It would take some time to make a full recovery, but everything looked good as they wheeled his bed to a recovery room.

Out in the waiting room, Sanada was getting caught up on his work using his laptop. Several lower ranking vampires and half breeds were scattered throughout the hospital to ward off any hunters who might have been spying enough to catch wind of his pet’s illness, but the former samurai paid them no mind. Shutting his laptop as one of the nurses came up to him, he made his way to the room that Six would be put in after leaving recovery.

After about an hour, Ohtori was brought from recovery to his room and left there to rest a while longer before being roused during a checkup. Giving Sanada a groggy look, he shakily gave the vampire a well sedated version of a grin and a thumbs up.

Glancing up from his once again open laptop, Sanada chuckled softly. Once the nurse was done, he set his computer down and stepped closer to Six’s side. “How are you feeling?”

"Floaty-" Ohtori mumbled simply, blinking at the light above his bed and turning his head slightly. "Don't like places like this with all the pickles....prickles...." He looked confused for a moment before managing to compose his thoughts. "Needles....."

Smiling a bit, Sanada stroked the dopey hunan's hair. "Needles are no fun, are they? But I bet you feel a lot better now."

"Mmmmyeah..." Ohtori agreed, looking up at his master with heavy lids, "I don't feel like anything at all right now- just marshmallows. The doctor says no marshmallows for a bit which is good because if I am one that is cannibalism and that is bad."

"I can promise that you are not a marshmallow. You'll be a little sore when then drugs all wear off, though. Next time you feel ill, come and tell me, alright?" Sanada's tone was somewhere between amused exasperation and genuine concern. He had enough on his plate with his Sire being sick, the last thing he needed was another major health crisis.

"Didn't wanna be trouble because Yukimurara-sama needs all the hugs..." Ohtori yawned softly, giving the vampire a groggy smile. "He's gonna get better..."

"You deserve them too, you know. I'm sorry I haven't been a good master lately. I've neglected you and the others, and that's not very fair." Sitting on the edge of the bed, Sanada kept his voice soft. "He will get better. Renji is working on finding a cure for him. Though I bet he'd love to hear you play for him once you've fully recovered."

"Life's not fair and Yukimura-sama is really nice when he isn't trying to get me to wear the maid dress-" a slight blush appeared, "besides when my family'd go to America there was a guy on tv who said he likes everyone the way they are....so..." He dozed off mid-speech, slumping against the pillow again.

Smiling fondly, Sanada fixed the blankets and fluffed his pet's pillow before returning to his laptop and his work.

After a few more hours, Ohtori stirred again, looking blearily at the slightly darkened room before looking at the vampire on a laptop, “Sanada-sama? ...You’re still here?”

Looking up, Sanada shut the laptop and stood. Walking to the bed, he sat on the edge of it and gave Six a soft smile. "Yes, but I'll be heading back soon. Take your time to rest, you need it. I'll return tomorrow, and you should be out the day after, barring complications."

Lightly pressing the button on his IV to give him a bit more pain medication to dull the forming pain, Ohtori nodded slightly. He assumed Sanada would have to leave with the sun coming up, but was a bit relieved he trusted him to be more or less on his own at the hospital. “Can my parents come visit? If they are even around right now?”

"Will you still return to me if I allow this?"

“Yes, Sanada-sama. I just... miss them. And if they see something about me being in the hospital or hear about it somewhere and I didn’t tell them, then they really will know something is wrong.” Ohtori chewed his lower lips slightly, knowing his parents would be very hurt if he hadn’t told them and they found out. As it was, he was sure they were worried not hearing from him at least once a week.

Reaching up to pet silver hair, Sanada nodded. "Then they are welcome to be here in my absence. I will inform your protectors of such as well."

“Thank you, Sanada-sama.” Ohtori smiled a little more, it would be nice to see them, even if they would likely do that over worried parent thing. He would wait until after the vampire had left though, before he would call them and tell them his medical troubles.

"You are welcome. I should go, though. Do not forget to rest." It pleased him to see his pet smile, and Sanada returned the look with a smile of his own as he stood.

“I’ll rest...see you tomorrow, Sanada-sama.” Ohtori stayed settled back against the pillows and watched the vampire, anticipating getting to see his parents again, even if it had to be here of all places.

Gathering his laptop, Sanada nodded his farewell before leaving the room. He needed to catch the others up on what had happened, check on Yukimura, and attempt to get some rest of his own before returning.
