Watching Labyrinth.

Contemplating.

Wish I could talk to Brian Froud on the better parts of it in relation to mythology. Namely, Jareth.

It's generally understood that Jareth is Sidhe gentry. Even though he's a king of the goblins and you don't see other gentry in the movie, he's still a king. You don't get to be king by being some paltry outside-circle fae. The bigger question, that I've been contemplating, is which court would he be from: Seelie or Unseelie.

Up until recent contemplation, I always figured he'd be Unseelie. Because he's the "bad guy." And because he's king of the goblins. And I mean, look at the other fae in the Labyrinth-- the fieries, the brownies, the goons with piranha-sticks, even the fairies flying around the outer rim, they seem to be more... trouble-makery. And the conclusion one would lead to... is Unseelie.

But then I stopped. And considered it. For as much mischief as Jareth causes, he -does- go through an awful lot of trouble for a human. In fact, his general disposition towards humans, towards Sarah... is fairly positive. I mean, fairly positive for a fae, especially a member of the gentry. He's willing to make Toby his. And he has... something for Sarah, though I don't consider it love/infatuation/desire until the second half of the movie.

Hmm...

sorry. I'm just doing a half-assed thought thang. For all we know, Jareth eschews both courts in lieu of doing things his way. I can see it in his character to merrily piss off both Seelie and Unseelie, having eschewed their delicate mannerisms and society for the fun and chaos brought about by the goblins/the Labyrinth. And then to play Mephistopheles to both, happily giggling over the ruckus he causes.

Damn you, Brian Froud. I constantly feel like the story told in Labyrinth is only the beginning arc in a full tale. Namely, once Jareth became enraptured with Sarah, he wouldn't let go until he tired of her. And he wouldn't tire from her until a) she finally became his, and b) she stopped being interesting.
