Fangirl Wednesday!

Apr 13, 2011 23:34

Hi everyone! I bring you recs for both stories and videos, some old and some new, but most are from smaller fandoms. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have, and if you don’t know the canon, that you are inspired to seek it out :-)

Stories

Fandom: Alice in Wonderland (2010)
Title: jam yesterday
Author/Artist/Vidder/Creator: mercurial_wit
Link: http://mercurial-wit.livejournal.com/49097.html
Rating: PG
Status: Complete, one-shot
Summary: Backstory for the White and the Red Queen.
Why I fangirl this: The author mixes details from the book and the movie in this tale about the White Queen, Mirana, as she’s growing up, and it’s beautifully wrought with a dark, creepy undertone that rings true to the character.

~

Fandom: Greek Mythology
Title: Iron Queen
Author/Artist/Vidder/Creator: raihu
Link: http://raihu.livejournal.com/132443.html
Rating: G
Status: Complete, one-shot
Summary: "There are those who are dead, and then there are those who are not but sometimes wish to be. Persephone is both. Persephone is neither."
Why I fangirl this: I find Persephone intriguing, the young girl who became Queen of the Underworld. The writing here is lyrical and the tone is just right, but what I love most of all is Persephone’s conversations with Cerberus.

~

Fandom: Greek Mythology
Title: Gorgoneia
Author/Artist/Vidder/Creator: Whisperslip
Link: http://archiveofourown.org/works/141274
Rating: General audiences
Status: Complete, one-shot
Summary: About the gorgons, what they once were and what happens to the two remaining ones, Stheno and Euryale.
Why I fangirl this: More really great mythology fic. This take on the gorgons, their past and what they become as the centuries pass and the world changes, is simply haunting and reading it sends shivers down my spine.

~

Fandom: Star Wars
Title: Victory, Later
Author/Artist/Vidder/Creator: jeanniemctavish
Link: http://jeanniemctavish.livejournal.com/7984.html
Rating: PG-13
Status: Complete, two chapters
Summary: "Missing scene from the end of The Return of the Jedi."
Why I fangirl this: After what Leia found out in The Return of the Jedi she must have had a lot to ponder and we never quite get to see her sorting it through in the movie, but it’s in this story. Also, Han/Leia is one of my all time favourite pairings.

~

Fandom: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Title: Cemetery Side Road
Author/Artist/Vidder/Creator: cherryice
Link: http://cherryice.livejournal.com/220504.html
Rating: PG-13?
Status: Complete, one-shot
Summary: "This house is not the place where Riley lives." Spoilers up to 2x10.
Why I fangirl this: The story manages to capture the difficulty of Riley’s situation, her state of mind and the ways in which she is broken, so well it makes me hurt for her. And I love the style of writing.

~

Fandom: Tin Man
Title: Something to Guide You
Author/Artist/Vidder/Creator: meyerlemon
Link: http://meyerlemon.livejournal.com/1157381.html
Rating: PG?
Status: Complete, one-shot
Summary: DG/Cain, what might happen between them after DG becomes queen.
Why I fangirl this: The author describes this as “totally Victorian” and the emotions are indeed understated, the writing sparse, wistful and lovely, and both DG and Cain are very much themselves.

~

Fandom: True Grit (2010)
Title: What a Peace Is Mine
Author/Artist/Vidder/Creator: xcgirl08
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6717838/1/What_a_Peace_Is_Mine
Rating: T
Status: WIP, multi-chapter
Summary: "People do not give it credence that a nineteen-year-old girl could leave home and go off in the summertime, to pursue a band of outlaws and clear her brother's name: but it did happen."
Why I fangirl this: I hesitated about including this since it’s a WIP, and one where it will take time between updates too. But it's amazing, and really, even if it never gets updated again it’s still worth reading, so I couldn’t skip it. Only the prologue is up so far, but that prologue is longer than many whole fics. It’s true to the humour and style of the movie, rich in historical detail and the characterisations of Mattie and LaBoeuf are pitch-perfect. The author has a one-shot up that’s set just after the movie’s ending and sort of precedes the fic above, and I recommend it just as highly: Oh How Bright the Path.

Videos

I wasn’t certain how to rate these, so I’m erring on the side of caution and putting most as PG-13 to R, since there are scenes of violence in them. And all contain some spoilers, of course.

Fandom: Ashes to Ashes
Title: You Found Me
Author/Artist/Vidder/Creator: FoxyLouu
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CT7EtfMCQIY
Rating: PG
Summary: Alex/Gene.
Why I fangirl this: I shipped these two like crazy and haven’t been so frustrated by the UST between any two characters since X-Files. They don't argue here, which is unusual for them, and the video is only 30 seconds long, but the editing and colouring are gorgeous.

~

Fandom: Downton Abbey
Title: Hardest of Hearts
Author/Artist/Vidder/Creator: summersparkle2
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKuTCh-1Qgs
Rating: PG
Summary: Mary/Matthew.
Why I fangirl this: I don’t think Mary is all that hard-hearted, even though it might seem so at times, but the song still fits, and in combination with the voice-overs and the way the clips are put together... it’s just fantastic.

~

Fandom: Devil’s Whore
Title: Ain True Love
Author/Artist/Vidder/Creator: summersparkle2
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5vic-IyM_0
Rating: PG-13
Summary: "A tribute to all the characters."
Why I fangirl this: The mini-series centres around the life of a young woman during the English Civil War. The vidder uses black-and-white imagery set to a traditional tune, poignantly sung, and the result is incredibly evocative.

~

Fandom:: King Arthur (2004)
Title: Song for a Winter’s Night
Author/Artist/Vidder/Creator: DreamVision
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbgfXp5M02M
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Lancelot/Guinevere.
Why I fangirl this: I wish that they had done more with the relationship between Guinevere and Lancelot in the movie, because I adored what little interaction there was, and this video gives a beautiful, melancholic view of the pairing.

~

Fandom: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Title: Ellison in Wonderland
Author/Artist/Vidder/Creator: beccatoria
Link: http://beccatoria.blip.tv/file/3793879/
Rating: PG-13 or possibly R
Summary: "There's no Kansas anymore, James."
Why I fangirl this: It’s expertly edited to a song that really works in this context. And it focuses on one of my favourite characters in the show, James Ellison, who surely must have felt that he was caught up in a dream, with everything that happened around him.

~

Fandom: Witchblade (TV)
Title: #1 crush
Author/Artist/Vidder/Creator: KeeperOfOrden
Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMah7O7ZpR0
Rating: PG-13
Summary: "a little vid from a little show from a little ago..." Ian and Sara.
Why I fangirl this: I was fascinated by the possibility of the two of them together, but it’s also undeniable that these lyrics quite accurately describe his feelings for her, something on the knife’s edge between desperation and adoration.

star wars - original trilogy, !official fangirl tour stop, tin man, downton abbey, true grit, ashes to ashes, alice in wonderland, witchblade, greek mythology, terminator: the sarah connor chronicles, king arthur, devil's whore
