Why I fangirl this: Reboot!Trek confirmed everything I'd been hoping for Spock and Nyota. What I wasn't expecting was such a close friendship between Jim and Bones. I read both slash and platonic friendship fics at kirk_mccoy, and this is one of my favorites. Bones is dying, and there's nothing Jim can do about it.

Why I fangirl this: Torchwood, Doctor Who, and Quantum Leap? I've just died and gone to heaven. I read this after seeing Captain Jack's episodes with the Ninth Doctor but before I saw any of Torchwood. It helps to have watched all of Eccleston's DW episodes and Torchwood: Children of Earth before reading this. And to have a few episodes of Quantum leap under your belt so you know what's going on from Sam's and Al's points of view.

Why I fangirl this: This takes place in Pete's World, the alternate universe Rose gets trapped in at the end of the second series of New Who. It's like reading Hermione/Severus, with an intelligent, competent young woman butting heads with an awkward, grumpy mature man ... watch the sparks fly!

Why I fangirl this: kudilu mentioned this fic to me last year, and she was right; it's right up my alley. I love angst, and I love stories where Severus is a mentor or father to Harry. The abuse described is difficult to read, but it would have to be severe for Severus to feel sympathy for him. This one shot has a multi-chapter sequel, Harry's New Home, which is complete in 64 chapters. (I haven't read it yet.)

Why I fangirl this: Hermione doesn't see much in the beginning, but she learns a lot about herself and Severus in this fic. It's very sweet. And the conversation with Ginny during dinner -- "Weasleys. They all ate like wolves were after them." -- makes me laugh every time.

Why I fangirl this: I get a guilty, eavesdroppish pleasure when I read epistolary stories because I'm reading someone else's mail. There's a mystery that Hermione has to solve and a romance between two prickly characters. No suave!Snape for Lady Strange.
