The divorce was finalized, but that didn't make the separation any easier. They needed to figure out custody and visitation arrangements for Rose and Hugo. Hermione was surprised that Ron wasn't more devastated than he appeared, but she didn't know he was pretending to make the transition easier.
The first week was challenging because they worked in the same department and saw each other every day. The second week was easier but still hard because they had to field so many questions from their children. Hermione assumed most of this responsibility because she was caring for the children more often than Ron due to having physical custody for them full time. The third week was the easiest by the far because the children grew accustomed to their new routine and were allowed to sleepover their father's house for longer than three days, which delighted them. By the fourth week of the month everyone had a routine. Ron was even starting to date again.
Hermione, on the other hand, wasn't ready to date again. She wanted to focus on herself and her children. She had devoted so much of her time to the marriage and felt lost upon its dissolution. She knew why the relationship failed and vowed to not let something like that happen again. Unfortunately, amid this chaos Theodore Nott asked her out, but she turned down his dinner invitation.
Theodore persisted but she didn't give in. He boldly asked Ron for advice and all he could say was, "Give her some time, give her some space and if she still says no then accept it."
It was a rather passive response and not what Theodore wanted to hear. One day when Hermione was working late he decided to stop by her office and bring her some dinner. He didn't intend to stay but her line of questioning and curiosity caught his attention.
"Why are you doing this?" was the first thing she asked.
"I know you've been going through a lot and I figured some dinner would help you get through this mountain of paperwork," he replied, pointing at the unusually large stack of papers next to her.
"Why don't you take no for an answer?"
"I did take no for an answer, but that doesn't mean I can't bring a colleague some dinner."
Theodore departed before she could continue to interrogate him about his intentions, which raised her curiosity level ten fold.
