They had made promises to each other. Alicia remembered every single one. They say they would always be there for each other through good and bad times. Miles wanted this to be true. They insisted that no one else could make them feel this way. Alicia didn't know why those words were uttered, but they had to stick to it now. She was a woman of her word and hoped that Miles kept such promises as well. Nowhere in their promises did they speak the fact they were both afraid of being deserted. How would you bring it up anyways? It wasn't attractive to admit such a truth regardless of gender. What kind of woman wants to hear that a man is afraid of abandonment? What kind of man wants to be vulnerable to the woman he loves? Unfortunately, they both let society dictate how they should behave in their relationship and it destroyed it little by little.
Alicia was packing her things and thinking about the many ways she contributed to the end of her relationship with Miles. It saddened her but the truth had a habit of doing that. Miles wasn't anywhere to be found. He didn't want to be around when she left. They agreed it was better this way. It wasn't easy to admit, but relationships come and go. They serve their purpose and once that's fulfilled it's over. They agreed to sell their home and would need to go to court to figure out living and visiting arrangements for the children.
Miles showed up as she headed for the door. "I thought you'd be gone by now," he told her quietly.
"I'm leaving now. So don't worry."
"I'm sorry this didn't work out."
"Me too."
"I'll see you in court?"
"Yeah, we'll try to handle this as politely as possible," she replied, not looking him in the eye. She wasn't ashamed, but she didn't want him to see the pain in her eyes.
