I received the Nook Simple Touch for Christmas and now I'm trying to figure out how to load a free book from BN to the Nook. So far this is what has happened

Calibre will not work for books purchased at the B&N site, even if they are free, because of the DRM. I use Calibre for books I find from various free sites that are DRM-free, but it will not work for books that have the DRM.
Just in case the OP isn't familiar with the acronym (maybe this is her first e-reader?)...
DRM = digital rights management. Here, it means that the vendor (B&N in your case) 'locks' your downloaded e-book so that it can be read only by your registered device and no one else's.
