Help with Nook?

Dec 26, 2010 05:09

I don't know if this is the place to ask this, or if anyone here can help me, but I figured I should try. I recently recieved a Nook as a gift, and I'm having a lot of trouble where uploading PDFs of fanfic is concerned. Not the uploading itself so much, but rather in the fact of formatting. So, the fact is, yes, I can get felisblanco's The Doors of Time ( Read more... )

Oh dear. The problem is that, as far as I know, NO current eBook device (except maybe the Kindle DX) plays well with PDF natively. Reflow (which is where the conversion tries to logically break the text so it fits on the smaller screen) never really works because the PDF is pretty much a picture of text. The only PDFs that can be successfully reflowed to read is those that are formatted to a 'paper' size matching the display dimensions of your device. (This, BTW, is why I haaaate it when authors post a PDF of their work. Why not in epub/mobi/HTML? Is it because of the pretty pictures? ::mourns::)

I just checked the calibre 'supported device' list and the complete line of Nooks is covered so you might want to try the PDF conversion from there. Calibre is generally VERY good about conversions, so this might work too!

Otherwise, I am sad to say, you will find it less frustrating to grab the story from Livejournal with cut-n-paste than kill yourself trying to make the PDF work. The Squeebook (http://www.halcyon-shift.net/gift-shop/squeebook) is a great way to automate that, so long as you have the links.

So it's a PDF issue! Good to know. *sigh* I'll definitely try Caibre and start converting to epub. Thank you!
