Hunter found Laura away from the party, sitting on a log beside the path leading back to the main Wind Academy building, looking thoughtful. Sliding onto the log beside her, he draped an arm around her shoulders, smiling as she instinctively snuggled into his side. "What're you thinking about?" he asked softly, his breath ruffling her hair.
"What I'm gonna do in the future," she admitted, nuzzling into his shoulder with a small yawn as the excitement from graduation started to wear off. "I mean, yeah there's the Factory Blue thing with Blake, but I mean after that..." Peeking up at him with sleepy blue eyes, she continued, "Ruth wants me to try to get a security job at Lightspeed so we can see each other more often." Ruth McKenzie, her biological mother, had been working with Mariner Bay's former Ranger team as a communications consultant and had been constantly asking if she was going to get a job somewhere close. "I told her I'd think about it."
"Well whatever you decide, you better tell me," Hunter said with a smirk before pecking Laura's forehead. "You know I'll miss you too much as it is."
Laura sat up and rubbed her eyes. "Yeah yeah I know," she said with a chuckle. "I promise I'll call you after every race with my results, good or bad, okay?" Leaning up to peck his cheek, she stood up and looked down the path. "Let's get going before our brothers start suspecting something," she finished with a snort.
"I think they already know," Hunter said, nodding to the end of the path where Blake and Dustin were smirking at them.
"Permission to throw Blake into the water next time we're at the beach?"
"Wha--"
"Dibs on Dustin then."
"Hey no---"
"Deal."
Blake and Dustin looked at each other and suddenly bolted back down the path towards the party, causing Laura to crack up laughing. "Do we tell them we're kidding?" she managed to say between laughs.
"You were kidding, I wasn't."
