The liquor burns my throat as I gulp it down greedily, the warm sensation of the drink not settling in my stomach the way I expected it to. After my fifth, I frown at the glass, then I frown at the bottle, before shoving both of these items away from me.

It has been years since I thought to numb the pain I felt. I never expected that someone so… ungrateful would be my undoing. Scowling, I make my way over to her room-or chamber-or whatever they call it.

She sits staring at the wall with plastic cuffs wrapped around her wrists to keep her tied to the bed. When she had woken up, all hell broke loose. She wanted to go back, to risk her own life for the boy. But I couldn’t let that happen. There were people who depended on her as well as him. The boy had trusted him to keep his word too.

“You’ll have to talk to me at point, Sweetheart.”

She glared at me. “You left him.” Her voice was full of venom and it made me grind my teeth together.

“It was the only way.”

She looked away from me. I sighed.

“Listen. We can all blame each other and ignore the most important part of all this, but I don’t think that’s the wisest idea right now.” She was silent and I sighed. “The boy asked me to save you.”

“You promised me,” she said shakily. “You promised me that we would save him.”

I shook my head, wondering how I could explain this to someone so adamant to misunderstand the grand scheme of things. “I did,” I said finally. “But you had to be saved first.”

Because as much as I hate it, you’re more important to them.
