Ani, what are we going to do?
Fuck if he knew.
It wasn't supposed to be like this. Why did she have to get pregnant now? If only it had happened after they'd won the war. Once he destroyed the Sith, he would own the Council. They wouldn't dare deny him. If he said it was acceptable for a Jedi to have a family, it would be so. He and Padmé would have a cozy lakeside cottage on Naboo and everything would be perfect.
What are we going to do?
He paced the cold marble floors of the home that wasn't really his, not daring to lay with his wife lest his body betray him and succumb to the nightmare that was sleep. He was glad Padmé slept, that the scared brown eyes were not trained on him, expecting miracles. When had she become so weepy, so weak? Why did he have to fix everything? Why had he ever wanted this? Why did she have to torture him by dying whenever he closed his eyes...
Horrified anew, Anakin rushed back into the bedroom to witness the gentle rise and fall of her chest, the slow rhythmic sound of her breathing, the moonlight bathing her sweet, peaceful face. She was safe. His heart swelled painfully with love, his frustration with her from mere moments before vanished -- and he vowed he would not sleep until he'd found the way to navigate them both out of this hell.
