Winifred shifted back to sit on her heels as she poured the last handful of dried nettle seed into the bottom of the wooden sieve, working it through briskly and efficiently, and sighing as another itchy cloud of broken hairs rose and dusted her face. Through long experience, she wore leather gloves and covered what she could--knowing the itch would still find its mark, at least partially.

No matter, the seed was a valuable part of her medicinal inventory and the benefits far outweighed the occasional discomfort.

"Winifred?"

She looked over her shoulder in some surprise as Hrothbert walked toward her, stepping around and over her back garden plants and flowers. Working the nettle seed outside at a distance from her home on calm, pleasant days was another concession due to long experience. Preparing herbs, seeds, bulbs and various other ingredients was easier done inside and on her feet by the trestle table within easy reach of whatever she needed.

"My lord." She nodded to him and scrubbed her cheek against her shoulder, finding the itch irresistible, before wriggling her nose in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid sneezing.

He came to a stop just behind her, pity and something else-- tenderness mixed with exasperation?-- in his expression as he reached down with a cool, damp cloth to wipe her face. "I thought this might help."

"Thank you," Winifred said, eyes closing in relief as he carefully cleaned away the irritating dust. "I thought it would be hours yet before you returned?" She tilted her head back and to the side, giving him easier access, hands laying still against the sieve, her work done.

"I completed the task rather sooner than anticipated," he explained, bending over at the waist to tip her chin further with a fingertip and steal a quick upside down kiss, his fingers trailing from her chin to her jaw and then up to gently tug on an earlobe. At Winifred's wordless murmur of pleasure, he moved again to capture her full lower lip between his own and tease it with his tongue before giving a playful nip and standing back up.

And I am undone as easily as that.

"Hrothbert," she said, turning to face him, while remaining on her knees. "I have finished here." There were not likely to be any other visitors to her out-of-the-way little croft today. "And I confess to having another 'itch'," she added, a husky edge to her voice, looking up at him through thick, dark lashes.

"Ahh, truly, my lady?" His own voice deepened, eyes fully violet, as he stepped closer--and did not kneel. "Perhaps I might be of further assistance...?"

Winifred smiled her agreement, skin flushing and heat coiling in her belly as she reached out a hand, and, gloved fingers stroking, circled his waist from the hip to the front along the leather of his belt. "But first?" she offered in a deceptively light tone.

He looked down into her eyes with a slow smile. "Yes." Then, as though he'd been doused with icy water-- "No! Wait!" He wrapped a hand around her wrist, firmly holding it in place. "The gloves!"

"Oh!" With amusement momentarily overriding passion, Winifred removed them by rubbing them off against the ground. "Now that would not do." She shrugged out of the dusty, nettle hair-covered cloak, revealing the thin shift underneath. "Not at all."

His growl at her laugh abruptly altered as she hooked her fingers into his waistband and tugged him close once more.

"But this will."

Hrothbert shuddered with delicious anticipation, burying his hands in her tangled raven tresses, and managed, "For a start."
