Chapter 9: Happily Ever After?

It felt like the wind had been knocked out of me, if at all possible, when Jasper walked in to the Café. My love was standing before me . . . it was a miracle! The smile could not be wiped off my face as I jumped down from the high stool and walked over to him. I couldn’t take my eyes off him, afraid that he might disappear if I merely blinked. If I could cry, there would be pools of happy tears. Everything that had happened didn’t matter and the love I felt for him was stronger than ever. I was happy, I was whole.

“You’ve kept me waiting a long time,” I repeated the line I said to him the first time I spoke to him.

He returned my smile as he ducked his head and replied, “I’m sorry, ma’am.” I giggled as he repeated the gesture, he was still the Southern gentleman I knew and loved.

Slowly, I held out my hand towards him. I had to use all my strength and control not to jump into his arms and kiss him. And, just like before, he took my hand without hesitation. I was so relieved. I was relieved that he did show up and relieved that everything happened as it should. I had my love, my life, my meaning back.

“Oh, Jasper!” I lost all of my control then. I threw my arms around his neck and squeezed him as tight as I could, too afraid to let him go. He wrapped his arms around my waist and held me close to his chest. In his arms I found the true love I thought was lost. He filled that deep aching hold inside of me.

He put his hands on my hips and leaned backwards to look at me. He studied my face, as if wanting to memorise it, than frowned slightly, “Alice, I need to hear the truth and I have a feeling you’re the one I can trust.” I nodded and forgot to breathe. Not that I technically needed to, but the humans would notice if I wasn’t breathing.

We sat down at a table in the back corner of the Café so I could explain everything to him. “We’ve been married for many decades,” I started from the beginning. “We first met in a Diner in Philadelphia, which coincidentally looks very similar to this Café.”

“Ahh . . . that would explain why it felt so familiar to me.” Jasper nodded his head as the instincts he had been feeling were explained.

“Yes, I sat in that Diner waiting for you much like this time.” I smiled at the fond memory.

“How did you know I would come here?” Jasper frowned.

“I can predict the future. Once someone has a decision in place, I can get a vision that shows the future with that decision.” I explained my power.

“So, what happened after we met in the Diner?” Jasper asked as he reached across the table for my hand. He intertwined his fingers in mine and I felt like I had died and gone to heaven.

“I told you of the Cullen family and how they lived as a family with real relationships and only fed off the blood of animals-“

“Wait,” Jasper interrupted. “So, you don’t drink human blood?”

“No, only animals. You’re instinct to do the same is from living with us. We were helping you cope without human blood.” I answered.

“Wow . . . I couldn’t understand why I could just walk away from those humans and hunt animals instead. Even when my throat burned for human blood and animal blood is so . . . foul.” Jasper scrunched up his nose at the thought. “So, we found the Cullen family?”

“That’s right. We moved in with them and that is where we stayed, together with our family.”

“So . . . how did I end up in that forest? You and your brothers had come after me?” Jasper frowned.

“Yes . . . you were struggling with our vegetarian lifestyle. You left temporarily to live with your . . . friends and feed off humans.” I struggled on the word ‘friends’. If Peter and Charlotte were his friends, they would have let him be.

“I left you? How could I do that?” I could tell the thought genuinely hurt Jasper.

I smiled, “It seemed like the right thing for you to do at the time.”

“Did I hurt you?” I didn’t want to tell him how much I was hurt. I didn’t want him to know about the pain and grief I went through. But I forgot that I didn’t need to say anything for Jasper to know exactly what I was thinking. We couldn’t read minds like Edward, but we didn’t need to. We knew each other too well and could have a silent conversation very well.

Jasper reached across the table and cupped my chin in his hand. “I will die before I ever hurt you again.” He promised. I put my hand over his and closed my eyes, memorising this moment forever.

“So, what happened then?” He encouraged me to continue as he held my hand in his on the table again.

“I saw the vision of Jane and Alec hurting you and that’s when we came after you, to save you, but we were too late.” My eyes dropped to the table as I admitted that I had failed to save him.

“Jane and Alec? Hurting me?” Jasper had been falsely led to believe that Jane and Alec were like siblings to him.

“Yes. They used their powers against you. When we found you, they were standing above you while you were twitching in pain on the forest floor. They’re the reason for your memory loss.” The memory of Jasper suffering made me shiver in hatred.

Jasper frowned as he realised how he had been hurt and betrayed. I wanted to ease him of his pain, to kiss away all his anguish. I wanted to kiss between his eyebrows to smooth the crease caused by his frown, to kiss his chest where his lifeless heart was breaking and to kiss those perfect lips that I had missed. But I was too afraid my actions would scare him away.

He must have felt my sudden rush of lust and desire followed by concern and anxiety. He lifted my hand, never letting go, and touched his lips to the back of my hand. I didn’t need Jasper’s power to feel the love and affection flowing through him.

“And Aro . . . he said that he was my father? And Maria my wife?”

“Aro is the leader of the Volturi, he has tried to kill us all in the past,” Jasper flinched as he felt my pain and revulsion from the memory. “He has no connection to you other than by species. Carlisle is your father, as it were. Maria is the one who turned you into a Vampire two decades ago. She trained you to be a Vampire Soldier and you helped her raise an army of Newborn Vampires. She used you. When you realised that you didn’t love her the way you thought you did and that real relationships could exist, you walked away from her. Which is when you met me.”

“And, that’s when I fell in love?” My eyes lit up at his words.

“I hope so, yes.”

He stroked the palm of my hand, sending electricity through my body. “You know . . .” he whispered, “I think you can really make things right for me.”

I smiled. The emotions I was feeling cannot be explained. I was exuberant. We continued talking, but I didn’t say half the things I wanted to say before we were interrupted by Emmett.

“Alice, there’s a little problem. We need to leave. Now.” Emmett led the way out of the Café as Jasper and I followed behind, holding hands.

Emmett handed my black cloak back to me and gave one to Jasper. We put them on and started walking quickly to the tunnel, where Edward met up with us.

“We need to move as fast as possible.” Edward warned.

“What’s going on, Edward?” I asked, concerned.

“Shh . . . just follow me.” Once we were in the tunnel, we ran as fast as we could to the end. We were just about to cross the street when . . .

“My favourite Cullens! How nice it is for you to visit my city.” The too familiar voice made my teeth grind together.

It was Aro.

“Hello Aro, unfortunately we were just leaving. We were only here for a quick stop. We’ll be sure to visit you soon.” Edward tried to continue walking.

“Nonsense. You’re not leaving. And Jasper, my son, where are you going?”

“I am not your son. You betrayed me, Aro. This is my family.” He motioned to the three of us.

“Oh . . . I am very hurt you could think that, Jasper. I have only wanted the best for you.” Aro feigned affection.

Jasper’s eyes flashed with fury. Only I could notice the change, I knew him so well. I tugged on his hand and forced him to look at me. I didn’t say anything. I didn’t need to say anything. He knew that I was telling him to back down.

“How about you all come with me. Now.” We reluctantly followed Aro towards the Volturi Castle.

If I thought it couldn’t get any worse . . . I was wrong.
