The first few days were easy. Steve was too tired to even think of picking up the 'phone and there were too many new sights occupying and fascinating him to allow other preoccupations to creep in.

By the second week it had become an itch at the back of his mind. Hugh kept finding himself picking up the 'phone to tell Steve something, or being shocked when he wasn't at their mutual haunts. They'd gone longer without seeing one another, but there'd always been the 'phone and it had never been planned as a month stretching away in front of him.

Th Andersons were a pleasant couple and Steve had fallen into the habit of taking dinner with them. In fact they had become fair enough friends in the past week, going on the planned excursions together - all with the ease of a holiday relationship where neither party will see the other again. It felt hollow, for all its pleasures.

Subconsciously Hugh found himself counting the days off in his head until Steve's cruise got back into Portsmouth. He was forced to draw an uncomfortable parallel with his behaviour the last time Kate had gone to spend several weeks with her parents after her Dad's operation. He decided it was something he didn't want to think too hard about.

Together for the first time in a month you'd think all the things piled up inside them that they'd wanted to say to the other would flood out, but the just sat there together watching the world go by. They hadn't a damn' thing to say. They didn't need to.
