Looking back with the luxury of hindsight’s hard-won perspective, that moment had marked the beginning of the shift in their relationship. It had been the first discernable symptom of an alteration in their perceptions at the very least.
In a way it was understandable - Hugh was tired and fraught - he and his wife had been having a stressful time lately - and Steve was out of his comfort zone, working on a project that was rapidly sapping him of his energy and enthusiasm for life. The stage was set and so it was that they simply walked past one another in the corridor, too locked into their own thought to notice the other’s passing. To most such a phenomenon didn’t even warrant notice, to them it was symptomatic of a deeper issue.
When things eased up of course they were back on the ‘phone to each other, and of course they still worked together. They had a long history and a warm, natural rapport no amount of money or training could mimic, but passing no longer gave that jolt of realisation or that horrible twist of guilty conscience as neglect was recognised. Hugh no longer needed to drop in on Steve when he was in the Wimbledon area. Steve didn’t always bother to look up and greet Hugh when he heard the other’s distinctive voice in the corridors of Broadcasting House. It became normal.
Then came the day when they came to start preparing for the next series of Bad Week. The pair arrived on time and came face to face with each other and the realisation of just how long it had been since they’d just met up for the sake of meeting.
