Cigarettes (Christmas) It was New Years Eve when Brad walked back into his house. In one arm was a carrier bag full of cigarettes, and in the other was a box of chocolates and champagne as an apology to Chester for being gone for so long.
The first thing he noticed was the smell. That decaying, dead dog smell. It reminds him of his childhood, when a dog died behind the synagogue and he and his friends came back everyday to see how long the body takes to decompose.
"Jesus, Chester. You could have cleaned a little".
He kicked the door shut with his foot, and checked the messages.
34.
It was like Chester hadn't checked his messages since Christmas day.
He listened to Mike telling Chester to call him. He listened to a dozen messages from himself apologizing and saying he'd be back soon. He listened to more messages from Mike, three from Chester's mother, two from his own, and random telesales calls.
"Mike wants you to call him, Chester".
Silence.
"Chester?"
He stands still for a moment, listening for his lovers' voice.
He walks into the kitchen and set the champagne down on the side, ignoring the sinking feeling in his stomach. He stands there, leaning against the side for a few minutes with his arms crossed before making his way upstairs.
The dead dog smell multiplied with every step he took, and he only had to look down the hall to know what happened.
A semicircle of blood stained the white carpet floor leading up to the bedroom door, and Brad screamed before he had even begun to push it open.
