Author's Notes: Of course I don't own OTH or Lucas & Peyton (although I wish I did) and originally the inspiration behind this story was when I came across the quote used at the end from Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City. Which of course, I don't own either. First LP fic posting here, hope you enjoy!
The wedding had been nothing short of perfect. It’d taken place only a few weeks after his twenty-fourth birthday, on a beautiful July day. There hadn’t been a cloud in the sky as far as the eye could see and the sun hadn’t stopped shining until well into the evening. It had been a fair sized wedding, 150 guests in attendance. Three bridesmaids and Three Groomsmen. Her father had flown in from her childhood home to give her away while his mother sat in the front pew, her eyes glistening as she watched. Proud her son had finally settled, and with the love of his life.
He’d proposed eight months earlier on a cold winter night in the middle of the skating rink in Central Park. They’d both prepared to fly home to spend the holidays with both their families. Hers was still small, with just her father but his had grown to include his younger sister along with his mom. It had all seemed easier once certain people had been removed from the picture and it was only them left standing.
The snow had been falling lightly all evening in perfect chunky flakes, just right to stick to your eyelashes. She’d been dressed in jeans and a new cashmere sweater he had surprised her with earlier that day, a white bomber style down-filled jacket layered overtop. Her fingers kept warm by matching pink cashmere mittens. He’d fallen to his knee’s, laughing as she’d attempted to push herself out towards the middle of the rink, after all, she’d never been much of the athletic type. Her cheeks matched the color of her mittens and she’d smiled and laughed softly at herself, taking note of how silly she probably looked, but it had been his idea and these day’s she’d been up for more than she would have been had she not left town. Tree Hill would always be her home but the life they made together in New York was one that she believed treated her with the independence she’d wanted. She had realized how different it was after she’d moved. This was the life she was made for. Her teenage years had been fun at times, but she was a young women now. He was heading into his final year at NYU where he was studying journalism, with offers already on the table for high positions to the worlds most famous Magazine and Newspaper companies. His dream of becoming an author still alive and now, within arms reach.
Grasping onto his shoulders for balance, she noticed he was a perfect height when he balanced on his knees, he’d brought one up, resting his arm on it. She hadn’t noticed him pull the black velvet box out from his inner coat pocket when she’d looked away to take in the twinkling lights intertwined in the surrounding trees. He’d taken her mitten covered hand in his, squeezing it lightly to get her attention. She’d glanced back and smiled down at him, her breath visible against the air as she brushed away a stray curl. “It’s always so beautiful out here at this time of the year..” Her eyes appeared to twinkle as they reflected the lights. “Not as beautiful as you.” He’d smiled slightly, nervous of what he was about to do. “Peyton… I..” He took a breath, he had her full attention as he brought the black velvet box into view with his free hand. Her eyes had widened, unsure of what to make of it. He continued. “I love you, more than anything this world has to offer. You are my everything, and I wouldn’t ask for a more perfect fit, than what we have. We’ve been through a lot together, and I know there is still a whole life ahead of us. Things that will test us, and things that will continue to help us grow, as individuals and as one. I’ve never been as happy as I am when I’m with you. Every minute we spend together is a blessing, from the early mornings to the late night conversations over coffee that we share. I want to continue this and I want to be able to call you mine, for the rest of my life… Will you marry me?” He’d found himself holding his breath as he waited for her answer. Tears had spilled over onto her cheeks as he spoken, opening the box to reveal the beautiful engagement ring inside. She’s nodded breathlessly. “Yes…Yes.. Of course I’ll marry you!” She’d smiled continuously for the rest of the night. His Mom had been waiting anxiously when they’d arrived home to their apartment. Proud of her son and excited to see her now soon to be, daughter-in-law. Talk of places and dates and idea’s had flown around that night over wine and laughter. It’d been pulled together by only the best wedding planners New York had to offer, and now as he sat, eight month’s later, he smiled to himself once again as he sat in front of his laptop, typing out the last lines of his paper;
"Maybe our mistakes are what make our fate. Without them, what would shape our lives? Perhaps if we never veered off course, we wouldn't fall in love, or have babies, or be who we are. After all, seasons change. So do cities. People come into your life and people go. But it's comforting to know the ones you love are always in your heart. And if you're very lucky, a plane ride away."
He’d clicked the save button before closing the lid down and glancing at the clock perched on his night table. 1:15am it glowed. She’d fallen asleep a few hours earlier, exhausted after a long day. He placed the computer on the floor beside the bed and it only took a moment before their caramel colored cocker spaniel curled up next to it on the floor. He reached down, stroking the dogs head lightly before reaching back and clicking off the light. Settling down under the covers and into her warm embrace.
