Last Wishes
There is no pain, no struggle, no fear. She goes to her death willingly, and her parting from him is peaceful. Joyful. Welcome. For a while, he finds that comforting. It's only later that it will begin to hurt.
He can deal with being alone; he's been alone most of his life. He can, perhaps, forgive himself for not being able to save her. He can surely handle her loss; he is, after all, an expert in death.
But, try as he might, he cannot find it in himself to be happy. And he knows he has failed her again.
