Title: Phantom Heart

Characters: Nei/Watari
Prompt: 034: Not Enough

Summary: Nei contemplates her relationship with the ninja, and wonders if she truly understands his heart.
Author's Notes: I'm not exactly sure how this pairing happened in my head. Sometimes, crack happens. XD

Bright ribbons of sunlight filtered into Nei's tent as she heard the distant cry of Jefferson sounding his bugle. With her acute sense of hearing, the Elf also picked up the groaning and sighing of the other members of the 108 Stars of Destiny.

"Watari, it's too-" she had rolled over to snuggle, but found nothing but empty space where he had lain. A disappointed sigh escaped her, despite the fact that she knew he wouldn't be there. It was just wishful thinking on her part. He would always return to the tent very late, and hardly spoke to her at all if they saw each other during the day.

Despite the fact that he had never openly said so, Nei knew that he cared for her. It's not enough, she thought. I can't live my life based on an assumption. He never tells me where he is, and always disappears. And it was true. Sometimes even for months at a time.

She wanted to affirm what she dearly hoped was true. Were their times spent together all lies? Did he really love her, or was she replacing someone else, someone he couldn't reach? Someone threw a coin in her cup, snapping her out of her reverie.

She looked up, and saw a man in a dark cloak.
"Sing me a song," he said.
"What sort of song did you have in mind, sir?" the Elf asked. There was silence, and Nei smiled. "I could sing-" she began, but was cut off with,
"Sing me the song of a silent man whose heart belongs to an Elf with an enchanting voice."

And so, Nei obliged the man, and sang. In her ballad, the silent man frequently disappeared, and often left his lover behind without saying where he went or what he did. In her song, the Elf's enchanting voice faded and cracked in the middle of a song for a stranger. The lyrics spoke of her yearning to know what was in the silent man's heart, for his presence in her bed was not enough.

Nei found herself in tears, and thanked the man hurriedly before running back to her tent. Later that night, Watari returned.
"You're crying," he said.
"Yes, I'm crying. It's because you're never here! I don't know where you go, and sometimes I'm not sure if you'll ever come back. It's not enough, Watari." Silence.

"No, it isn't." Nei looked up through her tears.
"W-what?"
"It isn't enough to live my life without you."
