Title: Settling In
Fandom: Suikoden IV
Characters: Keneth, Jewel
Prompt: 090: Home
Word Count: 375
Rating: PG
Summary: It's not that bad, really...
Author's Notes: Spoilers up to events after arriving at Obel for the first time... Once again, the table for other stories (as they're written) can be found here.

For a 'cave', it's surprisingly nice here, enough that Keneth can't help wondering what a structure like this is doing here. It's obviously been here a while, long enough for a few other people to settle in... Tov was nice enough to show them around, and Louise offered free drinks and some blankets to keep warm with... and Chadli... well, he seems nice enough, anyway.

It's obviously meant for something -- workmanship this fine wouldn't be wasted on just a few, unimportant travelers, would it? No, the king seems too smart for that... even with his odd habits, Lino seems a capable, cunning fellow, so there must be some reason...

...Perhaps it's meant to be some sort of emergency shelter, in case of an attack... the royal family could hide out here, or the civilians... though it doesn't seem big enough to house the whole town. Maybe just the women and children...

"...Keneth?"

Shaking his head, the former knight turned to face Jewel. She was still sitting upright, legs pulled up against her chest, covered with her blanket.

"When we get back to Razril... Do you think Paula 'n Tal'll be mad we left without telling them anything?"

When we get back... it's amazing to hear the conviction in her voice, even now. Maybe it's a little telling that they both see this as temporary, but he was already wondering where else they could stay here... A smile touched his lips, faintly, as he shook his head again.

"...I think they'll understand. We'll have plenty to tell them, anyway..."

Jewel's face lights up at that, and she nods quickly.

"Well, yeah! I mean, I can't believe we fought Troy and lived! And that mermaid was so beautiful -- though she didn't act anything like I thought a mermaid would, I mean, the way she chattered on and on?! I was surprised she didn't have to stop to take a breath! And she went so fast, too, and I still don't get why she called that crab her 'master', that didn't make any sense..."

Smiling, Keneth fell back onto the floor, listening with half an ear to Jewel's animated rambling while letting himself drift away. Maybe this wasn't quite home, but it would do...
