After it was all over and everyone had congratulated him on becoming the King of Louisiana, Bill poured himself a glass of brandy and walked out onto the front porch. A sad sigh escaped him as he looked up at the sky above him.
He had fought long and hard to become something better, to be able to protect Sooke was all he had ever wanted. But he had become king way too late. She no longer wanted his protection, she no longer wanted him.
What good was being the King if he no longer had his Queen beside him?

The moon shone brightly overhead as she waited for him. She was beginning to worry because he was late. And Bill Compton was never late.
She turned her head at the soft sound behind her. “I was beginning to think you weren’t coming tonight. What took you so long?”
As he pulled her body tight against him, he placed a lingering kiss on the top of her head. “I wanted to bring you this.” The diamond ring glistened in the moonlight as he held his hand in front of her. “Sookie, will you...”
This time she didn’t even hesitate. “Yes.”

The door closed with a bang as Bill sprinted up the stairs. “Sookie!”
“Bill!” A look of pure joy spread across her face. “You really came.” She whispered as he ran into the room and enveloped her in the circle of his arms.
“Always, Sookie.”

No matter how hard he tried to fight it or even deny it he had to admit that there was a darkness in him. Something so dark he was afraid if it ever got loose it could destroy everything he held most dear. But it didn’t worry him as long as he had Sookie. Stuck in his cubbyhole underneath the floorboards of his house Bill waited impatiently for the sun to set low in the sky so that he could once again be with her.

Bill leaned nonchalantly, he hoped, against the headstone and watched as she walked towards him. From the teasing smile on her face he knew she was in a playful mood.
The soft breeze tossed her hair around her shoulders and into her face, passion flared in his eyes as she tossed her hair back, her tongue darted out to wet her lips and he quickly shoved his hands into his pockets to keep from reaching for her.
Her lips curled into a welcoming smile, as he stood straight. Without a word she walked into the loving circle of his arms.

They had only just met, she was supposed to wait for him to ask her but she couldn’t wait to see him again.
The night was his time; it had been this way for well over a hundred years. He hadn’t begrudged that fact for a long time... until now.
Bill took a step closer. “How about tomorrow night?”
She nodded her head eagerly.

“Why not?”
She jumped at the anger barely hidden in the fairy’s tone. “Because I have people back home who care about me and I them.”

Sookie turned to look at her friend. “Stand what?”
“The way he is always staring at you. It’s almost as if he can’t take his eyes off of you. It looks to me as if he wants to gobble you up.”
A smile curled her lips. “You really think so?”
Arlene’s mouth popped open in shock. “How can you ask that? Isn’t it unnerving?”
Sookie quickly shook her head. “Bill is a lot of things but never that.”
