When you can't even trust the WRITERS not to bash
Dear Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc.:
I hate you. I hate you so fucking much I'm incoherent right now. I mean...it's bad enough when the fans bash Daphne for being a damsel or Scrappy for existing, but when the canon writers demonize the entire main cast for the sake of "drama"...!!
Let's start with Velma. Dear fucking lord, what did she ever do to you?! I was so happy when Shaggy/Velma was made canon in this show, it's been my OTP since I was a kid. But instead of making them a cute, chill couple like most fans always imagined they'd be, they turned Shaggy into a clueless idiot with dog issues and Velma into a jealous, sex-starved harpy with control issues who hates Scooby for being friends with her boy-toy. Not to mention it seems like she existed just to be an emotional punching bag! Why not just change her name to Meg Griffin and have the others take turns pushing her in the mud every episode?!
And don't even get me started on Scooby himself. The Scooby-Doo I remember was sweet and funny and loveable and treated Velma like a second BFF. Here? He's a jealous asshole who threatens and bitches at Velma for looking at Shaggy. The whole "love triangle" between those three was completely unnecessary!! A load of worthless plot-ruining shit that needed to die within the first few episodes!!
Shaggy was a fucking hypocrite. He dumped Velma because of Scooby, then dumped Scooby to chase after Mai Le. What are you saying, show? It's okay to ditch your buddy for a Hot Girl but not for a cute nerd? Were the writers sexist or somehow working through issues? Way to ruin a sweet awesome guy for the sake of that cliched bullcrap!
Fred? At first, I thought they might turn out okay. I loved Fred being a derp, I loved his "romance will mess everything up, let's all just be friends". Then suddenly he realizes he loves Daphne because she gets captured and wears skimpy outfits, and she's all that matters. "You're the only one who gets me", turning into a controlling ass, PROPOSING TO HER AFTER TWO MONTHS OF DATING?! Fuck, give me the old "bland" Fred any day of the week.
And Daphne. Turning into a pathetic doormat as soon as Fred returns her affections? I don't see how anyone can bash the old Daphne as "too girly" when this incarnation was handled so poorly. There's nothing wrong with a girl loving her boyfriend, or being girly. There's something very wrong with her putting up with controlling behavior and thinking the only way to get her man is to dress in skimpy outfits.
You wanna show that "CANNOT DO ROMANCE OMG!!!"? Forget Avatar. Any flaws the canon ships may have are NOTHING compared to what this show did. Derailing the characters for the sake of drama, thinking "romance" is only for pretty skinny girls and only if they give up their sense of self just to please the boy.
And the character bashing. It's bad enough when the fans bash characters for stupid reasons, but when the canon writers turn a sweet, intelligent girl into a whiny bitch to add "drama" to a story...ugh. I hope the creators fire those fucking professional character-bashing fanbrats and hire some smart writers for the next season.
And the worst thing about this? The show actually had a pretty kickass plot otherwise. I liked the whole original Mystery Inc angle, the reveal about Fred, the dark secrets. I don't normally like darker and edgier for the sake of it, but this show actually seemed like it might get THAT right.
Fuck you, Mystery Inc. It takes a lot to make me irrationally angry at a fucking cartoon, but your incessant character bashing did it. Congratulations.
