Sometimes ending one of these invasions was a long, arduous affair.
Sometimes all it took was
throwing a switch.
As the island's planet-hopping engines came back online, the mist retreated. The strange animals that had climbed out of the catacombs and into the light did, too. They slunk back into their corridors and their spinny rooms and their custard-flavored hovels to have a nice nap.
Cell- and internet service returned.
And, after a long, meditative pause...
... the island leaped back to Baltimore.
