The Park, Saturday Morning

Nov 19, 2016 09:57

Lucille had recently begun to take an interest in botany, specifically in certain kinds of plants. This island offered more of those than the countryside around Allerdale Hall, which she anyway wasn't allowed to visit. Or she suspected there were more to be found here if only she knew which ones would suit her needs and where to find them. Perhaps ( Read more... )

After speaking with Jono and finding out about the children (and being rather pleased it had passed him over for once), Hannibal set about finding those he might want to look out for.

It was difficult to miss the girl in old-fashioned dress peering at plants.

"Good morning, Miss." He gave her a little bow. "How are you this morning?"

Lucille managed to curtsy while giving the man a suspicious look. "Good morning, sir. I am not suppose to talk to strangers.#

"Would you prefer if I left?" Hannibal asked. "Or I could introduce myself. Doctor Hannibal Lecter, at your service. Now I'm not a stranger anymore."

"I am Miss Lucille Sharpe." Surprise. "You may stay, especially now that we are acquainted. I don't always do what my parents tell me."

"Pleased to meet you, Miss Lucille." He was so shocked. "And that's a good thing - it means you're thinking for yourself. What brings you here?"

"I am looking for berries," she said. "But I think it is too late in the season. Are you familiar with the local flora, Dr Lecter?"

"Somewhat, although I'm not an expert," Hannibal answered. "But I have several sorts of berry at home, if you're hungry. Or I imagine that they have some at the store."

"I am more curious about their medical properties," Lucille said, thinking that as a doctor he would know more. He would not suspect that a little girl was interested in poisons, would he?

Any random little girl, perhaps not, or at least less so. Lucille? Absolutely.

Amused, he answered, "We don't have many locally that are interesting, particularly not at the moment. My own knowledge is mostly through books."

Which he could absolutely supply.

"You have books on such things?" Lucille tried to hide her excitement, and she was quite good at that.

So was Hannibal, and he was very good at reading it, too. He hid a smile and answered, "I have books on very many things, particularly medical ones. Would you like to see? My library isn't far."

Lucille hesitated. Was this wise? Did Dr Lecter truly have such a library? But she was too curious, and she reminded herself that she had a pen knife in her pocket and a red ribbon too.

"I would like that very much."

Neither of those things was likely to stop Hannibal, but either would amuse him.

"Then by all means," he said, "follow me. I can offer you breakfast as well, if you'd like, and a warm fireplace."

Not to mention central heating.

Could sh steal laudanum too? That would be quite useful. Perhaps he wouldn't notice.

Thank you, Dr Lecter," she said. "You are very kind."

It would be somewhat difficult to manage. Not because he'd notice (of course he would), but because he didn't actually keep laudanum.

"And you are very welcome," he answered. "Right this way."

Still on her guard, Lucille followed Dr Lecter, hoping that the offer of breakfast and a library would turn out, unlike so many other things in life, to be true.
